hey yall looking for some input. the wife & I have decided to get a couple of kayaks. what were are looking to do is just do lake edges & easy rivers. my question is what should we look for in a kayak?, brand specific?, also what to steer clear of. I don't want to spend a pile of $ just in case this brain storm of an idea goes sour. but I want some thing that is comfortable. thanx for everyone's input.

Easy! Get yourself an instructor who knows the sorts of lakes and rivers that you both want to paddle. Make sure your wife has wamr gear (my mates who have wives tell me you never get them back near a boat if they get cold). You will both have more fun and learn much faster if you know basic strokes.

Paddling is dangerous. Be careful and good luck.

I know that the initial days with my wife were totally dictated on if she was warm or not. What types of rivers to you want to do. How hard to is the water on the rivers? Ultimately you should go to your local shop and tell them what you want to paddle. A whitewater kayak may not be the right boat of you want to spend %50 of your time exploring lakes. Who knows if you want to do that and paddle ww then you made just find that two boats is what fits your needs.

for lake edges and easy rivers, i would suggest one of the longer allrounders
(longer means you won't get so tired on the lakes). to get an overview of what's available, see the playak boats database:
playak.com/kayaks.php , choose 'Allrounder' as your kayak type, choose the model years you are interested in (more than one year with shift or control click), order results by length, click Go and there you have it.

i would definitely borrow or rent a couple of kayaks first before you buy anything... for shops and rentals in your area:
playak.com/links.php?l_op=viewlink&cid=4

good luck and have fun,
jeroen

Go to your local paddling shop and talk to them about the places you want to paddle. They will be able to ask the right questions to determine what type of boat will be most suited to what you want to paddle. They can usually also set up a demo for you to test the boats you are interested in.

well I went back to my roots and bought a canoe. I would like to thank those of you that responded. I just think that the canoe worked best for my situation.

thanx again, Steve
