One season but in retospect I got lucky. I read somewhere that if you can't pick your own line with out the influence of others don't bother. I think thats good advice. If your gut says no and you want to puke before you do it don't do it. But if your gut says yes and you want to puke that's pretty normal. Fear is good.

7 months, but that's not important. You have to feel that you are ready. Work your way up to it. Class V makes for a longer more physical day on the river then IV and below, so you have to me ready for that. My 2nd class V river, I had to portage the last 4 rapids. We had been on the river for 5+ hours and I was drained. I used all of my bodies adrenaline. So prepair for a lot more then just the rapids. It's the whole package you need to think about. :weights:

That said. Go get em! It's freaking awesome.

Don't set an expectation of when to run Class V, just aim to get as good as you can and when you do find yourself on the banks of one you'll know if its right for you or not. Bare in mind a class V paddler might walk what another paddler is running there should never be any pressure as you are toying with your life.
Until your gut says "sweet" keep safe and know your limits.

You would be better off paddling grade 3 and makesure ou can catch every micro eddy use the current to help you ie ferry gliding acoos rivers using waves holes, how communicate within a group reading the water andpicking a safe line and sticking to it. Being able to rescue yourself/ other paddlers!

Once you can do all this comfortably without thinking, try moving up one level to 4/4+ lines are harder to find and this grade is still has risks etc

by the time you get here things become paddle or walk and this a personal thing depending on how you feel that day etc if you dont feel up for it walk it will still be there for you to paddle in the future

have fun be safe n enjoy the river 8)

Personally paddled a few hit the lines but gets the adrenaline running all the same

Nice article.

I have been paddeling for 6 yrs and I think I have only paddeled one class 5 river, I only lasted about 200m before eating shit. What is class 5 anyway? I always think of rapids I can run or barely run as class 4/4+, and rapids I see the line through but cant possibly run or take the concequences as class 5.

I think it´s just best to paddle and have fun and let your sponsors worry about grating the stuff you are running :D
