My wife and I recently had the oppertunity to take my kids on a short rafting trip with class 1-3 rapids.

Ever since I cant stop thinking about getting a kayak and hitting the water every chance we get. We are over the road truck drivers and run team all over the country so we could pretty much get into a 1-5 day class anywhere in the country. We arnt sure exactly what kind of paddling we are interested in weather whitewater or in the ocean or what but definitly would like to try all. Except going over a waterfall which is a little extreme! I guess the first question would be the best place to go for instruction on kayaking and what kind of kayak would be the best to buy for a beginner? I cant wait to get started. It would not be possible for us to join a local group because we are never local. But on the other hand we would be able to paddle rivers all over the country. Are inflateable kayaks just as good as non inflateable?

Try starting with a google search for a paddling shop local to you. You are a truck driver so maybe pick a spot that you know has down time. If you come near Vancouver there is a good shop in Abbostford BC @ www.westerncanoekayak.com They may be able to help narrow down the type of paddling you are really interested in.

Regardless of where you go you should start by taking a course in whitewater paddling and maybe sea kayaking (if you want). Then you might be able to pick what type of paddling appeals most to you. Once that is done then you can continue with your paddling education and buy some boats.
