Hi all.
Thinking of starting up and I have no idea where to start. Have done some preliminary searching but cannot find any clubs near me (somerset UK)

I would like to make a modest start equipment wise to see if its someting I can become passionate about. Problem is I weigh nearly 17 stone gulp I am losing this fast and aim to lose another stone by Autumn so what sort of boat might I look for as a starter for paddling the local rivers and possibly some sea shore use ? I am not a complete noob and have some modest experience over 25yrs+ (strong swimmer too )

I always say that you should take a whitewater course first. There are different avenues to take in ww paddling that take different boats. I just met a guy from the UK who is big into the paddling scene. I will try to find out the name of some clubs that may help to get you started. Try your local paddling shop. Even if there is not one really close call the closest one and they should have some knowledge of who to speak to in the area that you are in.

Thanks for the response. Not really thinking of WW but I'll have a go at anything. I'll see if I can find any shops. Never thought of the obvious lol. Never actually seen one but some major town or city must have one somewhere.
I was wondering problems my weight might cause? last time I went for a paddle I was given a very short boat and it was practically under water. It was a real struggle to shift due to the drag. What type of boat might be suitable ?

Type of boat all depends on what type of paddling you want to do. Are you near the coast? Is it sea kayaking or surfing you are wanting to get into? If you are very large how about considering an open canoe??
As for clubs in your area have you tried the BCU www.bcu.org.uk

I think I said that in my initial post ;)
`paddling the local rivers and possibly some sea shore use'
I think an open canoe is not going to be a very sensible choice to try to man-handle by myself and get it onto and off of a car roof rack etc :roflol:

I'm not large large just very heavy boned. I am 6`0\" and built like a rugby prop

I know that you mentioned your weight but I don't know what 17 stone means. Can you give is to me in pounds (or kg I can convert). Realistically your height is not that much outside the norm. I know we fit guys into boats who are 6'7\". They have height troubles but you shouldn't. I don't know what local name brands are available. I don't know if this is close to you (it does mention summerset) but this was the first link on a google search of 'paddling shop somerset uk'. www.bournemouthcanoes.co.uk/ I hope this helps send you in the right direction. Your local shop should be able to help you the best as they can see you and see if your height is in your legs or torso. Long legs may create a problem while a long torso is already out of the boat and not as big a fit issue.

Hi
I was forgetting that you use pounds but not stones! well there are 14 pounds in a stone over here so that makes me about 240 pounds which is quite a bit of weight . My wife won't let me ride her horses and its surprising how many things I'm forbidden to ride on or in due to my weight.
Thanks for the link I'll try contact them today.
