kayaking certificates? 18 years 8 months ago #8723

Hello

I'm currently trying to find out about certificates or awards in kayaking for Girlguiding UK. We're trying to list all the available sporting qualifcations that members can try out.

I understand that there is a star system for kayaking, but I don't know any more about it and google is being unhelpful (probably becauseI don't know what I'm doing).

I'd be really grateful if anyone knew about any bodies that certificate skill in kayaking - for instance, who does the star qualifications?

Please help!

thanks

Sophie

Back when I first started there was another award scheme used for younger paddlers called the rainbow award which consisted of collecting the colours of the rainbow which might be more suitable but I think this is only available in the north of england or scotland although i'm not sure worth checking about though. The BCU is the national governing body for kayaking in the uk and you will be able to find all the information there including local clubs where coaching is available etc.

Hope thats helpful

Hi

thanks, I'll check out the BCU.

The age group of the girls is really quite old - 14-26 - because this is for the senior section, so it is adult qualifications we are looking for

cheers!

hiya the bcu have personal development award schemes in place which are their star awards they are numbered one to five

1 star intro to paddle sport
2 star beginner/ improvers
3 star intermediate more advanced skills beginning of rolling etc
4 star intermediate paddling as a group member on a journey down a grade 1-2 river whilst showing more advanced skills

then a big jump to 5 star

Group Leadership down grade 3/4 split into a training and assesment

it could be worth asking your coach as they should be aware of these or the BCU should be able to give you alist of local coaches

happy paddling
