Woul dnayone do me the big favour of looking at this video and tell me what the name of the roll is that their instructor does towards the end of the video.

dry roll is what i call that. see also the clip from our review of the Liquid Skills video:
playak.com/media.php?src=dmlkZW9zL1RlY2h...IC0gRHJ5IFJvbGwubXBn basically, the trick is to use one blade first to make sure your hair doesn't get wet and then the other to roll up again  (not that i can do it myself, but that's the easy to explain theory ) If you're happy, you're successful.

I learnt to do them last night in the pool. All it is really is starting in an offside backdeck roll position, pushing on your paddle before switching into an onside roll position. You do it exactly how it looks on the video.
PS wear a helmet. I hit my head a few times on the stern. |

There is a series of roll videos that will clarify the different rolls and terminology. It is confusing as to what people call the \"back deck roll\" If you watch the series of rolls at this link www.exchile.com/KayakSchoolRollIdentifier.htm you will have a clear idea of what is what, and a terminology that will allow you to communicate with instructors and experts.
To keep your head dry it will take one extra step over what you see in the video. It will take one extra push down and the blade that is not actively used. This extra push will keep your head dry in the transition to the active blades movement. Wearing the helmet protects you when you head hits the back deck the first few times you practice this. Believe it or not it is quite easy to learn. It is the moving Torso that causes the paddle to move. You do not need to get your shoulder into any extreme position. |

its a great roll to use for super fast recoveries when your iun a wave or hole. i know someoen who uses it for creeking, but i wouldnt recomend that because it leaves your face exposed.

However fast your roll is, not capsizing in the first place is the better creeking / river running / playboating technique.

i'm not so sure about using a back deck roll in creeking, but i've done it several times. when i'm in a hole, i tend to just hipsnap with the current and that seems to get me up. The one major advantage i can see with it is that once you have it really really well, you can do cool stuff like down river kickflips and air screws.
