So dad here went and got him a yak for his b-day next weekend and want to find a paddle and so on.

should i get a new one that is made for his size or find a beater and cut the shaft on it?

Anyone have a beater sitting around and want some cash for beer let me know....

The werner twist is a great smaller paddlers paddle. All of werner's paddles are of high quality. Get one.

A BIG YAK!!!!!

Pyranha s:6 200

I know this is a really big boat for his size, maybe to big for me but...

the idea \"with shop owners\" was not to put him in a boat that fits right of the bat. But more to keep him high in the water to get him use to moving slower and to pay attention to how to make the kayak move with use of power from the water.

get it?

then drop him in a jackson that fits and watch him flip that shit around!!!!!!!

A plus, the pyranha is new but a few years old and it was a flat trade for my beat up t3.

After he gets a new boat I get the handmedown or up pyranha for me to use when out on bigger water.

I m sorry Iwould disagree with that as he wont be able to learn much from a fat boys playboat as he will be rattling around inside you would be better off starting with something like the dagger dynamo or the fun series from jackson as his paddling skills will develop alot quicker and he can use proper technique then sell the boat on or trade it in for the next size!

As a coach trying to teach juniors in massive boats is a really hard job as they slop around inside so they cant learn to brace etc and practising rescues is a bit more akward im 5ft 6 tall 75kgs and find the s6200 toobig so it will be huge on your sin by all means get it for yourself it is a nice boat but the 190 may be more suited

Lendal make junior paddles which are cheaper than the werners or check out tywarps they have a smaller diameter grip area and also cheaper than werner!

I totally agree with URGE about getting him in a kayak that fits him, Before when i had a perception method i could barley get it around although i could roll it and then i just got a jackson fun 1.5 and i am able to do stern squirts, bow stalls and all of the fun stuff..and ive been doing some creeking in it also..I truely recommend the fun series by jackson kayak!!

And for a paddle.. Jackson also makes smaller paddles for kids too!!

I'm in the same process as you are, just bought a Wavesport EVO for my kids (8, 5 and 2 1/2)...400$CA...
now looking for a kid paddle, I have a second Aquabound paddle that I could shorten, but I think it will stay too heavy???
Jackson à 210$US is not for my budget...
So where to look? any adult model that could be found on the web used, taht can be shorthen?

Regarding the right size of a kayak... can only agree.. need to fit well, went paddling on the Jacques-Cartier river very close to home, and except of paddling in s straight line or move around... not easy to control the boat when the deck is under your armpits and you can move your butt all over the cockpit..
If I could affor a Jackson Fun 1 or 1.5, I would definitly... but hey... we were on the water!!!

The Fun 1 or 1.5 are easy boats to save up for..but i understand that some people dont have the budget even that didnt stop me i saved the money up in one month by working 2 days a week at minimum wage as long as your getting your family involved i think money is not the important thing but all that you are doing for your kids and getting them into kayaking < that makes u an awsom person!!

So is there a big difference between the fun 1 and the 2fun? I would think if your kid is going to grow a lot i would buy a 2fun and then pad it out and let him.her grow into it.

schlegel do a cheap junior size paddle ~£50 link and I reckon ty warp paddles should be easy to get shortened due to their design but have full sized blades and grip diameter and cost more than twice as much

thanks for the feed back guys and the link.

Still hunting for a paddle but have alot of leads.

Boat wise I think Ill keep him in this for a short time, cus we live right off the Chesapeake bay and do alot more flat water then any thing. That size boat should be good for a \"i guess you can say\" Hybrid between the two.

Hi there,

I understand the dilemna and questions that you are facing for your kid.

Been ther for both my son and daughter.

Paddle: If you can gertone near you I would recomend the H2O KID. It is really light, the y come in various shorter lengths (the shaft is good for their smaller grips and the blades are really tough. I nbought one for my daughter and if I had seen them before I bought the Jackson paddle (read galasport) for my son, he would have one too.
Awesome blades!

As for the boat. Anything you get him floating and paddling in will work as long as you outfit the boat for him. (read poads and foam)

If you are going to buy a boat I can stop screaming the great things about the Jackson 1.5. My son has one (10 years old) and can roll and ride really well in it. I am also going to order a pink one for my daughter.

The 1.5 gives them a boat that they will be able to grow in for a while and still perform really well.
Any bigger and they will have a harder time rolling and hitting those \"must make\" eddies and lines.

The one is really an awsome boat but kids outgrow it really fast (unless the are particularly small or are starting around 6 or 7 years old).

My son started in a 2Fun but it needed a lot of padding and would still need a lot of padding for another year or 2). It is not so much the length but the width.

Goodd luck with your decisions and happy familly paddling!

my younger brother started paddling when he was ten, so i know the problem. he was stuck in a big boat to and not only had trouble roling, but he would not have the control that a smaller boat would give. We got him a jackson fun because not only would it be a better boat for him to learn in, but it is much safer tow, i would not have your kid run rivers in a boat that big. Werner lets you specialize a paddle if you call them up, and the jackson offering has been working well for my brother.

Re:KIDs paddle and boat 18 years 7 months ago #9128

OK OK OK I agree with you all now. I took my son out on a flat slow moving river that had a little eddy around a island.

He wasnt up to his armpits in boat but he had to reach far left and right in order to paddle... Boats way to wide.

Going to start hunting for a used jackson.

Thanks guys, I may have just been blind to that if not hearing comments from you all. I would have over looked it and just been happy that he was out on the water with me.

But he could get it moving on the flat water on Stony creek...speedy.

I know that Jackson has a kids fun program offered by outfitters. Riversport near Ohiopyle, PA (they have a website) offers a Jackson Fun program. I would give them a call, it is a toll free number. They may be able to direct you to someone closer to where you live.
