I have a Riot Stealth, and i was wondering what i need for rapids up to level 3. I have a nice paddle and a good life vest already but i need a spray skirt too right? I am guessing a also need to learn rolls too???

get a helmet, appropriate cloathing (dry top, neophren pants, warm first layaer etc.) and a solid group of paddelers to hang out with, and yes a skirt, and a solid group of paddelers to paddle with and learn from and paddeling friends... you see the pattern here

I dotn kow anyone who is into kayaking, but next year when i get a job at a summmer camp i will probably meet some people to paddle with.

I have polypro shirts for camping, will this work instead of a neoprene top?

Well, search for a kayaking group near your location and join them. They will be able to give you advise on where too look next in techniques etc and make everything else bombproof.

the riot Stealth is a light touring boat.
you need to invest in a proper whitewater kayak.

I have this kayak, an dI have a few things higher on my priority list than a new one. It can deal with 2-3 so says my local dealer and friends in kayaking.

u can not go down white water on that ull die its way to long and the hull is a well rubbsh shape ull never be able to play

Don't bother with anything as fancy as a dry cag until you have a bomb proof roll - a dry top will really only of benefit to you if your not gonna be swimming every two minutes.

As for running rivers with your boat - you should be able to take it down grade 2 river with out too much hassle, anything greater than that and your going to have a very unpleasant day out.


The most important piece of advice is to get onto the internet and find a club near you and join it. Most clubs run training sessions where you will be able to learn most of the essential river skills, including your roll. Also most clubs have gear for use by its members so that should save you on the cost of shelling out for new pieces of kit. If you are going to buy new gear I reccomend you purchase a helmet and a bouyancy first - these are the pieces of equipment that are going to save your life in a sticky situation and you will want to be able to trust them fully.

If your going to be runnign class three rapids, geta new boat. The stealth might work in class three, but it would not be good boat to learn any whitewater
skill in. My advice is get a boat ment for whitewater, finda group of padling buddies and go out on the river for some fun. They can tell you waht you nedd in terms of gear, and no roll is probably oaky on a class three as long as you have other people there in case of a rescue, and you know the consequences of as swim. My advice on aboat to get would definetily be one of the Fun series from jacskon kayaks. Theyre great river/play and easy to roll.
