Hey all

Just curious if any of you particapte in the \"old bootie beer\" deal? How about yall overseas?

You know where you drink a beer from your kayak/raft footwear after a swim and buy a round of beers for the guys and gals that helped retrieive you and your yardsale down the river?

The crew that I typiclly roll with has also added a bad throw rope stipulation to the deal. If you miss your throw while your pal is getting worked you owe a bottie beer at the end of tha day.

I have also heard of some minors that get after it, who after a swim buy ice cream for the crew.

Anyhoo, its good motivation to not swim and to practice the your rope throw. IMHO.

I live in orego and am not eighteen, so i would have to use gatorade( havnet swam since the rule was put into practice) the throw rope thing is a good idea, but maybe even make it worse. Swimming is its own punishment, missing a throwpore effects the swimmer, maybe meaning life and death, the punishment for a missed tossed should be more than a bootie drink.

Yuck bootie beer :puke: :puke: :puke:

No in NZ we got the rescue beer system where the swimmer pays a beer for every single piece of gear rescued. But no bootie beer, first problem most of us paddle bare footed or in sandals so no room for beer, we just add woolen socks when it gets too chilly. And drinking out of a neoprene bootie is just plain disgusting  already the smell of the bootie is not very apealing  but there's no way I would drink out of a bootie.:naughty:

Never heard of drinking out of a bootie. :puke:

However, I learnt about swimmer beer right from the start - when the swimmer owes a beer to everyone who helped grab his gear afterwards... but it can be drunk out of a bottle or can. I like that rule, at least now that I don't swim as much.

But I don't agree bad rope throws deserve a \"punishment\". I don't enjoy watching my buddies take a painful swim and/or worse and genrally find screwing up a rope throw is its own punnishment, just as swimming is... difference is that swimming, you are cuasing a problem for the others who have to grab your boat, or at the least, wait for you to drain it after a swim, whereas throwing a rope you are trying to help a buddy who screwed up already.

I dont agree that a missed bagging should be punished. Im not in favor of any punishment.Im just saying, swimming is bad enough and if your going to go for the save and miss it, thats its own punishment to( guilt). So, if a swimmer gets punished, the logic follows... Again id like to say i dont agree with it, i was just putting it out there.

Though I've heard of the bootie beer concept, I must agree the Wiki post, it is simply disgusting. Some people who are game for it will buy their rescuers beer, but it's voluntary here in BC. If you're learning, and so spend a lot of time in the water, or are running a very difficult rapid, people don't expect or ask you to buy them beer. However, if you're a very skilled boater who takes a very embarassing swim in an easy rapid, people will bo hooting for booze if they rescue you. As well, among canoeists, the beer thing tends to be ignored when playing (canoes usually need more rescueing, as they're harder to roll. I'm allowed to say that because I paddle both, and have paddled canoes longer :) ).

Here in Iceland we drink Jack and cola from our booties, and if you don´t have a bootie you just borrow one from your mates or borrow a customer bootie from a rafting company (that is nasty). We also have the beer rescue rool, but not everyone pays up. The price is one beer per piece of equipment or person. This has started rescue competitions and many arguments over who rescued what :D

I also have one story of when we ran out of Jack some of my \"friends\" put a Whiskey/Gin mix into my bootie and made me drink it. Who needs enemies when you have friends like that

I've seen worse in ireland. Guy's being forced to drink the bootie juice. if you haven't already guessed thats the remnants left in there when you remove your foot.
Swim drinks the norm though, he who swims buys the round.
One other interesting method I experienced was at Nile River Explorers in Uganda. Its called the Funell. It's drinking a bottle of nile special beer from a hose and funnell stuck together. The result is the fastest bottle of beer you'll ever drink. Swimming was a \"funnell offense\" however when the Irish got there it was an animal that grew and it wasn't wasn,t long before just about anything became a funnell offense :puke:

I'm another who will vote against ruining good beer or shots by filtering them through a bootie. Yuck. Remember there are those who have peeed in their wetsuits and those who lie about it.

As to the costs set, that should vary by river and local custom, but I was never asked for any on the Chattooga and if I had ever charged and been paid, I'd be up a few hundred cases after a few thousand trips as I literally roped in as many as a hundred a day on a peak weekend. I took pride in my rope skills, but it got to be a drag sometimes having folks wait for you to put on so they could follow under your ropes and boat safety, without asking, when they were not good enough. I always asked when I was starting out, and I keep repaying the rope Les Bectel of NOC gave me in Corkscrew at 2.4 which was a random act of kindness to a beginner past his skill level.

As to a cost for missing, if it is a life or death situation, that person who missed will remember it the rest of their life. ANY BEER PENALTY WILL NOT ABSOLVE THEM.

I fiqured I paid my debts off 100 fold from my first year or two by passing it on, by saving others and teaching. Taught two more this week for free. DEBT STILL BEING REPAID AFTER 37 YEARS.

Its called the Funell. It's drinking a bottle of nile special beer from a hose and funnell stuck together.

This is a beer bong, try it with a fat hose and a funnel that holds three or four pints, the tube should hold a few. the higher you hold the funnel the quicker you chug (helps if you can leave your throat open). great fun and gets you ruined quick.

you all seem to have words of wisdom, i dont so i read yours...

If you break a paddle... new rule...

So Neil came up with the excellent idea of what to do if you break a paddle. After breaking mine and loosing it, and then Dave breaking his and finding it, we decided to drink a paddle. Check out the picture of me. The beer accelerates pretty fast, quite surprising. Holds about half a litre. Tastes great though, very foamy... I can recommend. Far better that a dodgy bootie. :notworthy:

I've never heard of a bootie beer. We always do Bootie Shots. We at least then can tell ourselves that the alchohol kills some of the germs. We just do it every time you swim, nothing else.
