Contact lenses and Kayaking 18 years 6 months ago #9629

As a contact lense wearer, I am constantly trying to not get water in my eyes. I think that this is having a detrimental effect on my playboating. Are there any suggestions for goggles etc or plain ideas for keeping water out of my eyes?
Thanks, GS

I just wear an old pair of glasses with a ski/ snowboarding string holding them on to my head. My string has rubber ends that slot over the arms of my glasses. I have been playing, rolling and river running in this style for over two years now and have had nop problems.

perhaps not as cool looking as contact but very effective

I also wear contacts and have been paddling in them for about 15 years - and never had any problem with them.

Can I ask why you don't want water in your eyes? Are your lenses hard or soft?

I use daily disposable soft lenses and they are great, I have never had any problems. As you already know sight is not just essential when you're upright - I open my eyes underwater too - to get a feel for what the hell is going on if I just messed up and got creamed.

Before you ask - I have never lost any lenses whilst paddling. I will however say that they do have their moments and can move sometimes leaving things a little blurry (when you're crashing through stuff etc) but this has got to be comparable to getting water on your glasses/goggles anyway. Blinking usually gets things back on track!

The other advantage I find is that you don't get problems with them steaming up in cold water/weather - something I know is a real pain for people I have paddled with who wear goggles/glasses.

So my take on this is try soft lenses (pref disposable ones so it doesn't matter too much if you do happen lose one), you can usually get a few trial pairs from your optician to see how you get on. For the record - I wore glasses for a year when I started paddling - went through 3 pairs very quickly, doh!

Hope this helps,

Ben
