I've found feather close to zero best in whitewater. Some manufacturers deliver paddles of 12 degree feather and it's about right.

i personally only use 30° and love it. that said, switching to 20° or 45° is just a matter of 5 minutes getting used to. it really doesn't make a huge difference and is fine as well. switching to 90° is something completely different. it just plain sucks for playboating, and even 60° is quite unhandy, like for stalls etc.

but i think you can go for the 45° without a problem, if the alternative is having to wait so long.

just my personal opinion of course...

I love my 30 degree offset AT Standard. I like some feather, although it may feel better for straight on strokes, I prefer some offset angel for bow rudders (Duffek Stroke). Also, when your paddle is vertical, you natural wrist position is NOT the same as a 0 degree offset paddle. This places more strain on the wrist. Although 0 degree offsets are good for bow stalls, to me they seem more like a gimmick than anything else. So... I'd say go with nothing less than 15 degrees offset. Finally, remember that everyone has their own preference... there is no \"correct\" answer to your question. The best thing is for you to try some out. Check with friends and go to a store to test one out.

Good Luck,

45 is the general standard at this time. There does seem to be a push to 30 around my area though. BC. I am always of the opinion that for someone who runs river most of the time 30 or 45 is fine. If you are playing mostly then under 10 is the way to go. With less feather you have more purchase from both blades in your stalls. With the higher feather you have on blade flat and one on an angle to the water. I am sure that you can stall fine with a higher feather but I have been told and have experienced that less feather makes it easier. I have also experience a low feather paddle with a strong headwind on an 8 hour river. The wind was a killer about half way through and I was wishing I had a 45.

I like minimal feather, I'm at 12 right now but will drop to 0 on my next paddle, and I creek a lot more than playboating. Only time I hate it is on the lake paddle outs that are in Cali, seems like it's allways a headwind, but really thats all feather was designed for, and how much do you paddle into the wind?

Best bet is to try differnt feathers, every time I buy a paddle I am getting less and less feather, I don't use a cranked paddle but find my wrists hurt less with a smaller feather, that and it seemed to improve playboating. I am with Darinm going to go for a 0 on the next paddle, but that is for squirt boating mainly.
