Six months ago I bought my first sea kayak - an ex-demo model made by one of the more reputable kiwi companies. I am generally happy with most aspects of the boat, however I find that it tracks poorly unless the rudder is down (too much rocker I). For the type of paddling I am doing at the moment (rivers and enclosed bays) it is not a problem, as I can always use the rudder, however I have read that for making beach landings in the surf it is recommended to raise the rudder. Is there a relatively straightforward mod I can make to the kayak that will improve the tracking when the rudder is raised, such as installing a retractable skeg?
