So I'm going to be going travelling for while , where there may be some good surfing. To be specific, I'm sailing from Papua New Guinea to Japan, but the main point here is that I'm musing about building a travel surf kayak, that folds down or comes apart. Space will be an issue, weight less so (I'm on a sailboat). Thus:
Has anyone tried to make a (really low-quality) surf kayak that comes apart for easy storage? I'm thinking something along the lines of a flat hull with some bow rocker, and then a simple deck, most likely in several pieces, to keep you out of the water once you're on the wave. I'm not thinking of a spraydeck or full cockpit, because that would take too much mechanical sneakiness, and probably wouldn't be feasible. As you may have gathered, this is not intended to be a surf machine with which to overthrow Mega, this is just something to help pass the time and fool around when there looks to be a decent break. I'm thinking the construction would be plywood with fiberglass over top for the bottom, and just plywood for the top. I'm cheap, I know.
Also, I know of several designs for touring kayaks and canoes that are canvas-esque cloth with aluminum frames that fold into a pack. I don't actually think that sort of a design would be helpful in the least for a surf kayak, but if anyone has a eureka moment with that sort of thing, do tell.
I'll elaborate on my first inklings of an idea when my computer stops whining. *sigh*
