River-running playboats 18 years 8 months ago #10404

There seem to be a lot of river-runner playboats out there: LL Cross River, WS EZG, the soon to be out Pyranha Recoil (which I am interested in), Jackson Fun, and so on. What are the advantages to these boats? How good of playboats do they actually make? Are they playful enough for the new school tricks?

They are playfull enough for all the new school tricks. I think these boats are especially good in big water playruns due their more forgiving nature and, bigger volume and little bit better speed. In big water, big holes and fast waves the added volume and speed make you go even bigger. Little playboats sometimes get swamped in big water which makes them hard work to paddle.

Are they playful enough... Depends what enough is :ask:

I have the ZG54 as a playboat and river runner but I found it a little small for more serious river running. So I decided to buy the EZG60 as my river runner and still got my blunt as a creeker. Playing with the EZG60 on sunday I was surprised as to how nice it actually felt. Not as radical as the ZG54 but still pretty good.
It is big enough to take split paddles, water, food, throw bag etc... for a full days paddling and not be too edgy. But still small enough to flatwater cartwheel. Good for splatting against rocks and what not and still able to loop it in a hole and cartwheel away nicely. Faster than the ZG in ferries and things like that.
Tough choice really. Ideally it is nice to have a couple of boats but it comes down to what type of boating, on what type of water, you'll be doing most of your boating on. ;)
They are pretty capable but are not the ultimate playing machines. Different strokes for different folks
