fiberglass playboat construction 18 years 6 months ago #11408

here, hopefully are some pics of the beginnings of a fiberglass playboat! We're working on gluing together the foam and getting it shaped so that we can glass it over.

Here is the design that we will be blowing up and using as a template to cut out the rough shape of the boat.

Your image didn't load, but here's the maquette in blue foam. It's too small to get rails and footbumbs on, but it gives the idea of the design.

it's just straight polystyrene foam, like regular styrofoam. We have some higher quality extruded stuff with a greater density for the more detailed outfitting, but because the shape of the boat itself is so large, the polystyrene works fine.
The plan is to glass the foam into a plug, then put on the final layup over that.

Re:fiberglass playboat construction 18 years 4 months ago #12660

here's a one sixth scale maquette that I just carved up. It seems like it's got a little too much volume in the bow, but the main idea was just to understand the contours of the knee and foot bumps. Any opinions?

Instead of using Fiberglass and having it break easier. Why dont you try putting a Kevlar hull and fiberglass deck?

Re:fiberglass playboat construction 18 years 4 months ago #12663

sounds like a great idea. If i had the money, i'd do a layer of kevlar between fiberglass over the whole boat. Alas, it looks like not too much in the way of funds...

Re:fiberglass playboat construction 18 years 4 months ago #12666

To keep the costs down you could use diolene, a fabric with similar properties as kevlar (plus: polyester resin sticks to it, it doesn't to kevlar).
If the aim is to keep costs down (which I would do for a first boat), use polyester resin, glass and diolene fabric.

Lots of budget/entry level polo and slalom kayaks are made this way and they last pretty long. Granted, they will be heavier than a boat made of carbon/kevlar but the costs are a lot less too.

If you use fibreglass only you'll regret it very soon as this stuff breaks very easily. Diolene or kevlar are a lot more flexible and allow the hull to flex a little. You will need glass to keep it stiff though, kevlar or diolene alone flexes too much.

Did a little research on this diolene stuff - looks like a brit thing, or european. Is there an equivalent in the states? If not, how to get it to the US from across the waters? I hate shipping costs!

Thanks for asking - I just presented for my school project. The boat isn't totally finished yet, but is ready to be fiberglassed off of the plug. We completed foam shaping about 2 months ago and now just need to layup the glass and pop it off. Hopefully post some pics once it's finished - couple months perhaps...

I'm afraid this might be true, diolene is widely used in Europe but most people outside of it don't know about it. At least it would explain the widespread use of kevlar in the US...

Perhaps a boatbuilder (like Malcolm Pearcy from Mega Kayaks, who visits Santa Cruz regularly) could bring over a few feet (Malcolm usually takes a few boats with him anyway)? Get in touch with him and ask

:)

Tools to shape foam
Hot wire (expensive) may not be required but speeds things up
Saws to cut foam
Kitchen knifes
lots of sand paper various grades
sander

once youve got your shape you will need to seal the foam with resin glass cloth etc.

check out shaggydesigns

they have great info that could be worth a gander
