When first learning to playboat... 18 years 3 months ago #12546

Would it be easier to learn in a 4Fun or Superstar? (or any of the star series vs. fun series, but these are the two I fit in). I am a beginner and I want a boat that will take me all the way from my first vertical move to loops and blunts.

I think the funs are for river running and playboating and the stars are more for just playboating. Check the jackson website

That is a difficult question to answer. Both boats will do the job of playing. While the Star is play orientated and the Fun more of a river running playboat. I have paddled neither so can't comment on the boats themselves.

If you are the type of person (and have the opportunity) for park and play spots and that is your goal, then go for the Star.
You say you want to learn. Learn paddling in general with river running and playing and whatever else, or only playing?
If you want to paddle rivers and explore them and still have fun along the way, go for the Fun.
Both boats will do almost anything you want them to do. A lot depends of paddler skill and confidence.
Try both and ask yourself what you want to achieve at the end of the day. ;)

I am not new to paddling. I am a class 4 river runner and creeker. I currently paddle a Wavesport Diesel. I am new to playboating. I want primarily a playboat that can also river run pretty well. But playing is my goal. I just don't know if the Fun is more user friendly or better to first learn the trick then a Star. Could be wrong though.

A dedicated playboat (Super Star in this case) is more userfriendly and easier to learn playboating moves. For a riverrunning playboat you will sacrifice some of the ease of playing in favor of getting a more stable platform for riverrunning. In your case you allready have a riverrunning boat, The Diesel, so I would suggest you to get a dedicated playboat.

Well, in that case. Get the Star or All Star or whatever it was.
I wouldn't bother with the Fun then considering you are a decent paddler and have the Diesel already. Enjoy... ;)

What about the Project or the EZG?

The EZG is a great playboat. I would chose it over the project and later ungrade. The EZG is easier to spin and cartwheel. The extra length also makes it a great river runner. It's defenitly a better choice than the old funs

What about the new LL Ronin? I haven't tried it, but it looks pretty sweet...:ask:

The one thing I would think about if considering the Star is that you may find yourself coming up the peak of a wave or hole and falling backwards and upside down as the stearn is so short compared to where you sit. I'd only go with the Star series if you want to pretty much only play.

There are so many boats that are a bit longer than the Stars but more compact than the Fun series. Check out Liquid Logic. The Ronin like was mentioned before and also look at and the Vision 56. I love my V56 it can do everything other boas can do and then some. Here is the link to my review of the L.L. V56.

I'm not a big fan of Wave Sport as they have had issues with screws pulling through or cracking the plastic in the cockpit-rim from the seat mounts. That happened to me and when I did some research, I found it to be a problem with a few different models.

Have fun, feel free to ask more questions.

The screws in the cockpit rim that attach the seat and backrest to the boat. This is a recurring problem in various blogs that I've read about and it also has happened with their EZ and EZG models.

I broke 2 Big EZ's like that. Luckily I got brand new boats both times from Wave Sport, no problems... On my third boat is looked like it would do it again so I sold it. My ZG and EZG looks fine :-)

Re:When first learning to playboat... 18 years 2 months ago #12673

There are a few brands that hang the seat with bolts, and the bolts are prone to pulling though. One solution is, when you first get the boat, put foam blocks bettween the outside of the seat and the sidewall of the boat to keep the seat from moving back and forth. (all seats move, it's a question of how much)

Also, keep an eye on the bolts. usually you'll notice some extra stress before you have a real problem. If you catch it in time, then you can remove the screws and place a large plastic washer with silicone sealant to spread the stress and give you more time before its' a real problem.

Just keep an eye on things and it should be good to go.

Now that you mention it, My ZG's cockpit rim has a crack where the screw is.:(
