Scott Mcclusky got tenth place in the Green River Narrows race in a c1 very admirable feat. Eli Helbert runs creeks most kayakers will never in an open boat

Found this almost Funny as when I was starting out in 1970, I was trying to go places in a 4 meter kayak that Robert Harrison was going in his 16' open Mad River Trippers, and kevlar Mad River Screamer, like down Overflow creek and Section IV of the Chattooga at high water , like 5.5 feet, or section III at 10+ feet . HE made running the Colorado look easy. Think Mad River canoe had a calendar of his runs the next year using photos taken by his wife at the time, Tina Ray, now Tina Stultz of Whetstone Photography. HE and John Cadell both looked great running their opens on the Gaulley and the New in the mid to late 70's.

By the way, I learned real fast that canoes can go places that Kayaks sometimes should not, as canoes can bridge over stuff that kayaks can not. I swam 40 foot of waterfalls on Overflow learning this after being suckered into running Pinball on the right where Robert would run it in his open. Found it sort of hard to roll in a rocky sieve with two halves of what used to be a nice one piece New World paddle while being pounded on the rocks and drops.

C1's of this time period also shined greatly with the likes of Alan Singley, Roy Gertner, John Hefty and others in the southern US watersheds, going anywhere a kayak could and sometimes going there first to show us what could be done. That's why Singley's waterfall on Overflow creek is now called that instead of Singley's portage as it used to be. (previously said to be the only thing he ever walked) He got tired of hearing us call it that so one day as we pulled up to lunch, so he didn't get out but shoved off from shore backwards, never scouting it or looking. He climbed back up to the top of the rock when he had eddied out below, to tell us now We had to run it. Was long lunch thinking things over, but it really is easier than we thought.

So yes, open canoes (Don't even have to be those short rockered ones) and C1's can run creeks and bigtime Whitewater. Part of why they used to brag half the paddle, twice the paddler.

Another funny thing....
I happened to be looking for info on my old canoeing and photography mentor, Robert Haririson and lo, I found this post that even mentions me, John Caddell.
Yep it is true, Robert and I paddled 16' Mad River Explorers down Section IV of the Chattooga back in the 70's. I moved to California in 1980 and started paddling and guiding on the S Fork American River. Had the 3rd run but first no-swim run on the Tuolumne in 1982 and did it in my Explorer. Ran it again in 1984 solo with no life jacket. Went back to Ga one year and hooked up with Robert to run the Russell Fork in canoes but that was my first experience in a little rockered boat. I used a loaner from Nolan Whitesell. Didn't care much for that boat and eventually bought the Mad River ME which I absolutely loved to paddle. I eventually lost both of them in a fire at my house and now use the Mad River Freedom - solo and tandem.
Nowadays I am more interested in seeing what lives under water and travel around the world to go scuba diving.
But at 56, I am still a professional raft guide on the South Fork American River in California. And my parents, bless their souls, thought whitewater was just another one of my fads! I will be a boater till the day I die!
Thanks, whoever you are, for remembering me.

Sorry but any canoe filled up with that much flotation is just another decked boat. Open canoeing means keep it upright and empty. But hey, what do I know, I'm just an oldtimer purist that could.

The creekin film has made me miss my Spanishfly :( and the fun I used to have paddling it in the whitewater! Even with those big air bags these boats still take on a lot of water and become quite awkward to paddle when full and are nothing like decked boats, but still verydifferent to paddle then the trad canoes which are great fun aswell
