Hey I am thinking about getting a play boat but I cant get to a river every day since its a 2 hour drive but there is a lake near by. Does anyone know of a kayak that is good for doing flatwater tricks so i can practice. I am looking at some daggers and fluids. because I can get a good deal on them

I agree. I have a Flirt medium mainly for flatwater stuff as well (I've got a small pond about 500 yards from my doorstep and the nearest decent river is 800 km away :( ).

The Flirt is fun on flatwater :notworthy:

Yeah, the Flirt is a very cool boat for flat water tricks. It is also a pretty good on waves, holes and also a good river runner. If you're in the right weight range and with enough skill you can run some pretty intense stuff too. Observe:

I disagree slightly. If your looking for a playboat mostly or exclusively to flat water you should look for slightly aged designs like the LL Session+ or similar with a bit more low volume ends and greater length. The slicy ends makes for much smoother and balanced cartwheeling.

To a degree you are right but unless you come across a good secondhand boat for you it is easier to buy a new boat (disregarding costs etc) because they are more available. Plus, I found that being pretty tall the more modern designs offer more leg/footroom than the older boats. In other words: I can paddle for over an hour in my Flirt whereas I had a lot of trouble in my Blitz Special after 20 minutes or so.

Besides, my local pond is pretty shallow (about 1 metre deep) and when vertical I tended to get stuck on the bottom :roflol:

I have to respectfully disagree with you. While those boats are easier to flatwater cartwheel they are next to impossible to flatwater loop, and its not like the newer boats (eg the Flirt) are difficult to flatwater cartwheel anyway. He's not going to be boating exclusively in the flat either, just a bit more than he would whitewater.

I think the Flirt is the best option from the Fluid point of you, handles really well on waves and holes and is a more than decent river runner.

I don't know who told you that but its not hard at all, i promise you. I'm a small guy and i can roll the large really easily so you should manage fine, especially, if you're within the weight range.

Play boats are harder to roll than creek boats, or, if you like, boats with steep vertical side walls are harder to roll than boats with a rounded profile.
They are on a par with other play boats and not hard to roll :yes: :roflol:

Sure, the wavesport EZG and Projects series are quite good, as are the Dagger Crazy88 and Agent. Each boat has its quirks but in general most playboats can be used on flatwater too. Especially if you have the correct boat size for you.

BTW: Jackson boats are pretty good too, so if you come across one, check it out.

Necky is very hard to buy overhere, as is DragoRossi so I cannot tell whether these boats are suitable for flatwater use.

Hey Nolan,

Why don't you send Elize Steyn from Fluid (in South Africa) an e-mail. Ask her where the nearest dealer is to you. I'm sure she will be willing to help you out with info and/or make a plan. Her address is: [mail address protected from spambots with javascript] . Schweeeet. Good luck mate.

Go for a Dagger G-Force! a bit older model but for sure the best flatwater boat!
check for what you can do with a G-Force on flatwater: www.playboat.tk/foto10/foto10.html

Re:Flat water playboat 18 years 1 week ago #14776

I know my technique sucks big time but the G-Force lacks volume in the rear if you're tall and put the seat back. Basically it sinks, whereas boats like the Flirt have a big bottom that keep the boat nicely symmetrical in the water :D

I used to own a G-Force 6.3 and was glad to sell it. Although it was probably a better boat than my limited abilities allowed it to show.

Re:Flat water playboat 18 years 1 week ago #14777

the low volume in the back is what gives the boat easy abilities on flatwater, it makes (clean)cartwheels, loops and a lot other moves easier. Higher volume isnt nessecery for flatwater, well as long as you are not to heavy for the boat.

Re:Flat water playboat 18 years 1 week ago #14778

Humm, weird. Being 83 kilo's I figured I am not too heavy for a G-Force 6.3 (the biggest version). However, Casper (van Kalmthout) commented out that with my seat back (not all the way back, just a little so I was comfy enough to paddle for half an hour) my boat was very tail heavy and he told me to put the seat forward so the boat was more balanced.

I guess being 6'4\" with 36\" inseam I am not a size for the G-Force anymore, although Dagger and sales people claim otherwise.

In the end I ditched the G-Force and got myself a Flirt. Very nice boat :notworthy: . BWT: the Flirt also has slicy ends but just behind the cockpit it has volume. I like that in a boat.

The G- Force is a very nice boat for it's price, and does perform remarkably well on flat water and features. That said, so do alot of other boats, if you can check out the Jackson Fun series, they're awsome on the flat aswell as being capable on waves and in holes, pretty alright running up to class 3 rapids ( maybe more, but i'm not sure)

I've got a G-force myself, and though i love it dearly, i will grow out of it fairly soon, and i'll probably go for a different boat after that. Seriously though, if you fit a G-force well, it is sweeeeeeeeet.
