Need advice on modifying the Burn thigh hooks/pads. The thigh
hooks/pads are not hooked enough for my knees/thighs. I like to be tight around the knees/thighs. When I roll the Burn my knees/thighs sometime slip out toward the inside of the kayak when I do my hip snap. What are some alternatives available to me?

I read Leland's article on modifying. My knee is snug toward the outside of
the kayak but I want the inside snug/tight fit for a bombproof roll.

Could you move the foot block back so there was no chance of you slipping out?

It might work to put some foam behind the thigh brace so that it curves at the back more and holds your leg snugger.

I guess you could put a layer of foam on the face of the thigh hook too and just make it the shape you want.

I paddle a burn too and haven't really done any of these but they seem like the least serious modifications that migh solve the problems.

A block of foam, properly glued (with contact adhesive) to the inside of the hull and just below where your knee would be, works well. A lot of manufacturers have this problem. I am quite flexible and can get my knee right down so always add some foam there. Busy with another boat. I might put a small article together of what I did to outfit it. One cannot use a boat off the shelf. You always need to add foam here and there, under the seat especially for me. Personal choice. If you don't only put under the seat. Then at least on the seat, in front of your ass, under your thighs. That helps too. Good luck. Have fun and don't be in a hurry.

Hope that helped, a little at least. Cheers

try a jackson happy seat. they force your knees up into the thigh hooks without killing you if you want to get out

into that knee block thing adrian, in the news watch there's a riot article about knee pads too. Im outfitting my creek baby and im curious how you people did that knee pad thing. Any pics of how they fit inside that boat? Where do you place them, right underneath your knee or more towards your leg? thanks :)

Theres a post here that shows a good looking fairly simple extension for burn thigh hooks.

For knee blocks just wiggle them about until they feel right, if you make them about 6-8\" long then theyll fit under your knee and thigh and spread the pressure more.

Standby for the article (but don't hold your breath )
In the mean time Jasper, I'll e-mail (this evening - photos at home) you the photos. Tried out the boat this weekend and the knee thing worked well. It really made a big difference. In Ollie Grau's book is also a photo of what he recommends. Good book with fantastic pictures.

Third book from the bottom  Well worth it, especially if you're new to kayaking. Shows draw strokes, ferries, eddy in and out, rolling etc. in high quality sequences. Otherwise it's great just to look at the pictures.
