Time has come to retire the old Huka and to get a new creek boat.Started the ball rolling by doing some armchair research on the weights of the various boats out there. Weight should not be a first consideration I know when buying a creek boat but:
1. Here in New Zealand we have a lot of rivers where we have to walk to get onto them (anything from 3 to 15 km - some of these are overnighters which pushes boat weight right up)
2. I am hoping to get to California next year and then boat weight might be important when flying (I think when I flew to the Zambezi last time weight limit was 25 kg - pretty easy to achieve when flying with a playboat minus all the gear required for a creeking trip).
Here are some weights from manufacturers websites (ranked from lightest to heaviest - using the smallest version of each boat):

1. Jackson Punk Rocker (17 kg)
Liquid Logic Huck (17 kg)
Pyranha Burn (17 kg)

2. Prijon Creeker 225 (17.5 kg)

3. Fluid Solo (18 kg)
Bliss Stick Huka (18 kg)
Riot Magnum (18 kg)
Eskimo Salto (18 kg)
DragoRossi - The Mafia (18 kg)
Wave Sport Diesel (18kg)

4. Liquid Logic Jefe (19.5 kg)

5. Wave Sport Y (20 kg)

6. Necky Crux (20.4 kg)

7. Bliss Stick Mystic (21.5 kg)

I guess the first question that comes up is how the actual boat-weights stack up against stated weights. I have done some none-scientific river side weight judgements and clearly some of the manufacturer's scales need readjusting.
Personally I was disappointed the Mystic was so heavy - I would like to support NZ made gear but that is one heavy piece of plastic to carry over those California granite slabs.

Thoughts anyone?

For sure. I couldn't agree more. I have yet to weigh a boat (with a digital scale) that is on or below the stated weight. My Neck Blunt was 11.8 % more than stated. It weighed in at 21.8kg. More than the stated 19.5 kg. Sorry, can't help with the others. Good luck. :D

don't trust the weight on the website, some boat like the crux are very heavy because of coil spring bulk head

the magnum is not the lightest one, but it have a lot of plastic where you want it. your 17 kg boat worth nothing if after a frontal pin you kayak nose is crushed and leaking :cursing:

the magnum got more plastic in the nose and in the rail, i just pin a 3meter falls, my left ankle is seriously bruise but the nose of my magnum is sligthly dented

i suggest you to go with a magnum a make some holes in the outfitting (leg, seat , aluminium rail) :2cents:

to save weight, buy a lightweight take a part paddle or make your own

I have a site where I am collecting kayak weights vs. advertised weights.

kayakweights.blogspot.com/

If you weigh your kayak feel free to send me the info and I will add it to the list.:)
