So now that my playboat woe's are over (and thanks again, Damn I love that project) Im now looking at getting a new creeker.

I currently own a Pyranha Micro and have abused it to the ends of the earth. Sadly I am too heave for it and it is in too poor of shape to really be in heavy use.

Im 6 ft 1 240lbs (110kg) 32 inch inseam.

Im looking at a few kayaks out there and have gathered a ton of info but cant get out to demo without driving 2 hrs (my local retail outlet was leveled by a tornado 6 weeks ago).

Its down to this short list:

Jackson Mega Rocker
Fluid Solo
Pyranha Burn (large)
Pyranha Ammo (large)
Wavesport Habitat 80

Im leaning to the Ammo as it appears to be a good river runner too... then again I have heard the same about the JK Mega Rocker and I do like what EJ has done for kayaking...

I plan to use whatever boat I get for creeking the Lake Superior shore next spring and then running larger volume rivers like the Gauley etc...

All help in any way I will treasure...

Thanks

How ever much of a fetish I have for Jackson Kayaks, I would put my money on saying that the Burn and the Ammo are better river runners then the Rocker series will ever be. Now, you can allways take your Mega Rocker river running no doubt about that. But the Pyranhas have a much more river running feel. Dont get me wrong the Rockers are great creek boats.

You say \"river running feel\"

what does that mean to you? Im trying to get in your head to understand what you mean...

Thanks for your input

(if that comes off as rude i dont intend it to, ive written this reply a dozen times trying to not come off as such)

I think the river running feel he is talking about has a lot to do with the flatter hull on, say the Burn, as opposed to the Jackson. It feels quite different when you're paddling, more lively/responsive with the flatter hull. My :2cents: and my opinion :roflol:

Your choice of boats is good. But I'd stay away from the Ammo. Unless a shorter creek boat is your cup of tea. (Burn is a good design but after some first hand knowledge I am wary of the quality) And I'd go for the Habitat or Fluid Solo, naturally. (I wrote a review on the Solo you can see here: playak.com/kayaks.php?op=showreview&rid=223 )

I too have heard rumor of the poor job pyranha did on the burn...something about it loosing hull integrity within a few weeks of harder creeking... this makes me nervous and leaves me let down with Pyranha, they have done me well in the past

I will consider what you say about the ammo... Truth be told, Im just not sure what it is I am looking for... We have some world class creeking up here and I want to be able to get into these rivers... and be confident that I have the right tools for the job.

If you are after real creeking (running low volume steep rivers and big drops) you need a big boat for your size. The Mega Rocker and large Habitat are well big enough and while the large Solo is slightly smaller it should work as well.

For your size I would probably look for the Dragorossi Critical Mass as well. Probably the best design of them all if your a bigger guy.

I can't speak for all the boats there. However, I have found that the Burn is quite an untuitive boat to paddle & repsonds well to input from the paddler.

I am still somewhere between novice & intermediate paddler but liked the feel of the boat & it's behavior in the water. It felt as though I was a part of the boat itself. You seem to be able to feel how it reacts to the water. I had very few tippy moments which I have found with some other makes. Or maybe I'm just a rubbish paddler!

I have to be honest & say that I do feel that the finish is not quite what one would expect from Pyranah; especially considering the cost.

Hope this helps ( making a decision on purchase is never easy ).
