Hey Martyn.
The L shaped bracket doesn't hold the bolt. What you need to do is take the screw all the way out and look down into the seat through the bolt hole. You should see a hole, slot thing. In that slot there is a threaded nut that takes the bolt to hold the seat. The easiest way to line them all up to take the bolt is to take a long thin screwdriver, or ice pick or piece of wire and stick it down into the hole and line it all up and then screw the bolt through the boat, the L bracket and the seat into the nut. Sounds funky but it will work. Let me know if there is more to it.
