I was wondering if anyone can tell me the difference in the ease of rolling between these boats. I currently have the Pyranha s:7 /2, and i simply cannot roll it, even with private lessons. Also, I am under the weight range of the s:7 by about 25 lbs. Is this the problem, and would the Diesel be easier to roll? I am in south central NC, so i would mainly be paddling at the US National Whitewater Center.

If you look at a cross sectional view of the two boats you will notice that the Pyranha you're talking about is quite box like. Think of a rectangle and the very sharp, square edges at the bottom corners. Then look at the Diesel and see that is more rounded, right? Then think of a log. Think how easy a log is to spin in the water. The Diesel is easier to roll because of it's slightly rounder shape, check the sides too.. A creek boat with rounder edges would be even easier to roll. It doesn't make a difference that you're under the weight range. Make sure you're snug in the boat. If you're too loose, then it's not going to help your rolling. Don't give up! You will get it. Wear goggles in a pool to make sure of what you're doing in the beginning stages.

The diesel will be easier to roll but you should be able to roll the s7 too. Like Adrian said, make sure youre well outfitted in the kayak. There is a train of thought surrounding rolling that goes kinda like this

"If youre having trouble rolling your boat, youre having trouble with your roll not your boat"

Im going to be paddling the USNWC sunday if you want some help

Thanks. The one thing i realized is that during my lesson, once the boat got just over halfway it would pop over. however, the hardest part was getting to that point. One other thing i would like to do is demo it, so if anyone knows of a place in Charlotte that demos wave sports, please post it. Also, what is the speed difference, if any, in the two boats? I will occasionally take my kayaks on a river, and would like it if it is faster than my pyranha.

I'm heading out this saturday to take a roll clinic, which i hope will go better since i moved the thigh braces back 2 positions. I will update asap after i get back. also, I plan on hopefully trying a different boat to see if it is any easier to roll. The USNWC carries Dagger ,LiquidLogic ,Pyranha ,Riot, and DragoRossi. Any ideas on a boat that may be similar to a Diesel 65? I am thinking something like the Dagger Mamba 7.5, but if you have any other ideas, feel free to post.

As far as i can tell, the Mamba and Burn are both planing hulls, while the rest are displacement. The Remix may be a planing hull, but it is not a very flat hull. The Wave Sport outfitting is probably the best, since Pyranha's is only a few pads. Liquid Logic's outfitting is pretty good, but i am still wondering what happens if there is a small tear in the mesh from something like a zipper. If i were to use a Mamba next time at the USNWC, do you think i should use the standard model or the creeker? Also, the roll clinic went well, except for that my left hand was out of position for the C to C. next time, I may try the sweep roll and the back deck roll, as i have a tendency to lean back during the roll.

Almost everyone starting out learning the roll has a tendency to lean back during the roll, that's because the boat rolls easier that way. When rolling without a paddle most completely lie down on the back deck, it's almost impossible to pull of while sitting forward. The reason why most people do lean forward is safety, they don't want to organise a meeting between their face and the riverbed. During the roll, many people move backwards to about upright position, far enough back to help the roll along but close enough to the front to lean forward again if the roll fails. Well, many people, I know I do...
