Fibreglass Slalom Boats and Backrests... 16 years 9 months ago #22231

So I was wondering, after a session in a 4 metre 1990(ish) fibreglass slalom boat, how to fit a decent backrest to the boat without splitting the fibreglass? (I actually realised how important one is!). Also, what type of backrest should I consider using? I have a rubbish ratchet-less one from the back of a g-force - but without drilling holes in this boat, I have no way of mounting it!

Comments, thoughts, and general musings appreciated.
Regards,
GS

DONT PUT A BACKREST IN, if you're really struggling change the seat. For slalom you should be able to use your core muscles to sit slightly forward. you could change the seat for a larger one, however it is worth just doing more training and developing your core so you dont rely on a backrest

I hear what you are saying, batman100, but i then ask this: what are the point of footpegs to push on if all you are going to do is fall off the back of the seat?

Thanks,

hello there
i guess the seat in it is a flat fiberglass one here is a vid on how to fit an ir reggie back band in to a slalom type seat .
if you skip to 3.45 you can just watch that bit of the vid

It sounds like you seat is too big for you , my slalom seat has like a back which digs in just above my backside, i put some foam on there to stop it hurting, thismeans i dont fall off the seat!

Dan: Thanks, but I can't seem to find the link to the video. Is there a hyperlink to it?
Batman: I am not sure that it is too big for me, it is just that the seat is one of the integral to the deck/deck lip ones, and is therefore very flat. If you race, do the people that you race against not have backrests?

Thanks in advance,
GS

I know very little about slalom boats but have got a K1 and have never seen one with a backrest.

In my whitewater boats I always paddle with one but there is one French dude here in Cape Town that builds his own composite boats (surf, play and even creek!) and ALL of his boats DO NOT have a backrest. I don't know how he does it... He's the only person I know that paddles whitewater without a backrest. :cheer: Different strokes for different folks.

A bit for off topic for this debate with slalom boats but I thought that was quite interesting. I assume no one reading this removes the backrests of their WW boats? B)
