I'm a new boater who has all the essential gear-except for a paddle. I'm 6'2" and I paddle a Wavesport Diesel 75. Any suggestions for a good paddle for someone looking to do whitewater? Any help especially generalizations as far as a good paddle length for someone of my height paddling a Diesel would be awesome, thanks a ton everyone!

Most people, including myself, use Werner paddles because of their durability. The paddle that you buy will depend on your price range. Werner's low end paddles are $130 and the high end paddles are $440. I would recommend the Desperado ($170), which is what I have. I am 5'5" and use a 200 cm, which is probably considered to be way too long for me, but I am still growing, so I didn't want to outgrow my paddle. Werner also has a fit guide. I would recommend looking at the 197/200 cm paddles.

I reccomend the Lendal Kinetic. Its just as durable as the Werners but they feel a little sturdier to me. They're also quite cheap (£70) i'm 6'2" also and use the 194 version and its worked well for me over the last few years :)

Keep in mind that you are a new whitewater kayaker. You don't need to spend a lot of money on a good paddle just yet. So I'd look in the used catagories and the the $70-150 dollar price range. I still have my first paddle that I still use until I can afford a nicer one, it's a carbon fiber straight shaft with plastic paddle blades by AquaBound. Not fancy but does the job. You could look into a used Seven2 or H2O paddle, Werners are great, AT is another top brand.

Oh and for your height I'd get something in the 197-200 range. I'm 6' and my paddle is a 197cm, but soon I'll be getting a 194cm

Hey Jake, I'm not going to recommend a particuar maker (most people use a Werner???) but will say that you should be looking for a paddle wioth a stiffer blade and a flexing shaft. Your Wave Sport is a lot ob boat to move around and cheap plastic blades or a paddle that is "play" spacific will not do it. You need a paddle that will make you boat respond with power. I run a Mystic creeker and use a At ATX, I would recommend it but the marketing brains decided to drop it because.... I won't go there. Also you may be a beginner but I think you will be a WW paddler for life so don't go cheap. You will find that your paddle is the best investment you can make. It is you motor, brake, trraining wheel, kick stand, snow shovel, tent ples ect... Find the paddle that works for you in the 195-197 range and enjoy.

They have re released with the Flexi shaft and bought out the Eddy which looks like a good alternative for rocky rivers :)

I personally use AT2 for everything inc creekin, try a few out go for what you prefer as you will be using it for a while if not many years!

Happy boating

I´ve got three paddles. Werner Powerhouse and two AT paddles. One AT4 and the other one I think is called AT3 - not quite sure though. I like them all. The Powerhouse is lighter than the AT´s but mine, unfortunately, isn´t bent shaft. But that doesn´t stop me from using itB)

I'd say, go with something like an H20-2 or AT2 or something from Werner like the Sho-Gun/Stikine/Powerhouse. All great paddles. :cheer: Of course, there are cheaper paddles and MANY other decent options too. B) Either neutral bent or straight - your choice. Carbon or fibreglass - your choice. Depending on budget and personal choice. Stiff carbon paddles can be harder on the body but have a more direct feel. For your height, 197cm would probably be fine. Length is a personal thing though... Some people like shorter paddles with big blades, others not. :silly:

I'm 6', paddle with a 197cm H20-2 or a 197cm Werner Powerhouse (carbon bent) for creeking/serious river running depending on what I feel like. I play/surf/chilled river running with a 194cm H20-Team paddle. All 30 degree feather. All my paddles have neutral bent shafts. Hope that helps. :)
