I just picked up a Fluid Solo today and i am having trouble getting the larger bulkhead in. If I take off both metal guides, I can get it in, but I can't figure out how to screw it on. Any suggestions???

Congrats! I'm sure you'll be stoked with the boat. :)

The bigger bulkhead is used if you're short for the boat and have the bulkhead pulled up closer to your body as it fills more of the space there. The two aluminium strips bolt on with two set screws on either side. It shouldn't be a problem. You should be able to remove the existing bulkhead without removing the aluminium. You may have to bend them a little though. I did this several times on a recent trip to put a small dry bag in the bow.

If you try to put in the larger bulkhead, you will see what I mean. However, I have decided that i will use the smaller bulkhead, since I have no room with the large bulkhead all the way back. I am still wondering if there is a special way to get it in or if it is just a design flaw.

I've personally put the large bulkhead into the small Solo and it fits.... ;) You do realise that if you try to push the large one too far forward, then it won't fit, of course. :)

Can you take pictures of how you got it in? I am still confused as to how you secure the bulkhead onto the rails, since if you put it in first, then you can't reach the back.

Also, as a side note, does anyone think that the hip pads are slightly uncomfortable? For me, it creates pressure points on my hip/upper thigh unlike any other boat that I have paddled/looked at (Jackson Punk Rocker, Jackson Hero, LL Remix 59, WS Diesel 65, Pyranha Sub 7 2-ball, LL L'il Joe). Does Fluid have any plans on changing this, and does anyone think they need to change it? If you look on Fluid's site, it appears much more contoured than mine are (imagine the shims shown with a sleeve over them).

Oh man... Put the aluminium rails onto the bulkhead BEFORE you try and put it in. Then reverse the direction of the bulkhead (as it normall would sit), guiding one rail in first into the front of the boat on one side of the pillar, then turn the bulkhead as that rail effectively wraps around the centre pillar. You may need to bend it a touch to get it around the other side. But it's a slight bend that is not permanent. Then keep guiding it and like magic it's in position. Go back to the shop you bought it from or ask another boater if you don't get it. It's really a simple process... :)

Move the hips pads until they are comfortable. That's why they have a velcro system to offer a wide variety of positions.

Thanks for the advice. I got the bulkhead in! I'm still looking for some hip pads, and have already found a person willing to sell some LL's for $5. They are the pre-2008's, so if anyone has used them extensively, please reply.

I found the velcro shims for the hip pads nice to work with until the light cover peeled off and the velcro would no longer stick to them. Fortunately, you get several shims. I replaced the hip pads with some Wavesport pads. Also, I replaced the thin seat pad with the Jackson happy seat, it makes for a more comfortable seat with way more purchase in the groin and ass (the back of the Solo seat is great but the front is kind of flat). I used big foam blocks to increase the outer thigh purchase (bad knees). Love the backband. :cheer:

I have been looking at the WS hip pads as an alternative, but they are kind of expensive($50 compared to $12 for padz brand). I think I will be able to check them out at a local store this weekend. As for the seat, I don't have any problems with it, but once I paddle it for a long period of time, I might think differently. So far, it looks like the Solo is the best boat I have found (good balance of hull design, durability, outfitting, low price). It seems like the Solo is the only boat that does not lack in any category, so hats off to Fluid!
