in need of helpful hints on buying a playboat 16 years 3 months ago #24596

I posted this because im in need of finding a playboat but dont know what to buy. Of course I plan to demo boats first, but i just dont know what boats to demo. I will be new to playboating so i would like something that would be somewhat easy to learn in. I also would like a boat so that i cannot only work on cartwheels but also be able to later work on loops. Any suggestions?

Fluid Flirt, Jackson Fun/Star, Liquid Logic CR/Biscuit/Ronin/Vision, Pyranha Rev/Recoil/420, Riot Astro, Bliss-Stick RAD/Specialist/Smoothy. This is a short list, but I haven't paddled many playboats (just Pyranha Sub-7). Since around 2003, most of the designs have been rather similar, with playboats being 6' to 6'4". Your weight could also help determine the right boat. If I were to get a playboat, I would want the Fluid Flirt that has the fin attachments, but that is just my opinion. The only thing bad about Fluids is that the hip pads are not contoured, but I still got the Solo with the Harmony/Wave Sport F.A.T. hip pads for less than a Wave Sport Diesel.

If you want to learn quickly, don't get a dragorossi fish, its not a fogiving boat, and unless you have a really good paddling tecnique you will find learning tricks really hard.

i'd say go for the Jackson range, the Star and Fun models to be exact. Very fun boats, and as a beginner i find them the easiest boats to do things in.

Oh yeah, if your young, like under 18/17 don't buy a new boat, go second hand, as chances are your'll grow well out of it in a year.

It would be very helpful to know your weight, height, shoe size and age.
All of the existing and potential "buy this boat not that one" responses will be tailored to your specific size instead of being guess work.

Using the Fish as an example. If you are a super light person, then the Fish is a bit difficult to learn cartwheels for the first time. But, if you are about 165lbs, you are perfect weight.
And, if you are strong and aggressive, the Fish is great too.
Note that the guy in the Fish in this particular photo series weighs only 135lbs, but he is an aggressive paddler so makes the boat fly.

You're a bit heavier and shorter than me, but you may want to try out the Jackson 2Fun. I couldn't fit comfortably because of ingrown toes, but I saw a guy that was a good bit heavier throw it around easily. It is really hard to find a good playboat for your size, since most ranges top out at 150-160, but the next range begins around 130. That being said, a boat with slicier ends like the Wave Sport EZG series would be better to learn cartwheels, but a boat like the Jackson Star would be much better at looping, due to its length and volume. Keep in mind that if you go for a smaller boat, you won't have much room to grow, but will be able to do basic playboating moves like enders easier, but a larger boat will be better for aerial moves and make you float higher in the water, which would be better for big water rivers like Gauley, Futalefu, and the Zambezi.

I am about 6'1 and weigh 159 pounds and have big feet.
For a full playboat I would look at the Fluid Nemesis medium or if you want to start with something slightly more forgiving/stable have a look at the Fluid Flirt medium. if there are no Fluid dealers in your area I would then look at the Riot Astro 54.
Good luck and hope you get a new kayak that makes you smile.

Have you tried the dagger agent?
not too good for learning cartwheels in buts its possible...
also good for loops :)

You're height and weight place you at a huge advantage! Lots to pick from.

Where are you located at? In the Bliss-Stick line I would say a RAD 175 or 180 depending on preference or a Smoothy if you want to step up a bit.
I am 5'7" and 175 and mostly paddle a 175, I am a bit heavy for it, but fit like a glove and love the way it feels. It will cartwheel effortlessly for ya, and surfs like a champ.
Drop me an email with where you;re at and I see if I can get you in contact with an agent.
Cheers

My one best piece of advice is to get a boat which fits your height and weight; then attack it with adhesive minicell foam!

Medium Fluid Nemesis. :) Yes I'm biased. :P Yes it's still a good boat anyway. :) So go and demo one. Also check out the Bliss Stick boats RAD/Smoothy.

No one wants to recommend him the Pyranha Rev S or the Pyranha 4Twenty S/M? I'm 5'10", 165 lbs, size 9.5 shoe, and the Rev S is super small for me but I bet it would be a great size for you. I'm paddling a Rev M now, and I love it! I've been learning to get the bow down on several other playboats this year, such as the 4Twenty S/M and the Dagger KingPin 6.2. The Rev just seems like it will have more "pop" to go airborn when I finally get to that point. The Dagger KingPin 6.1 would probably be a good boat for your size as well.
