First rivers that come to mind are Zambezi and Futaleufu, which are both rafted and at least class IV. Both are big water rivers.

Hi there!

Ups.. i wrote all of this before i noticed that you want to go in the british winter.. well :) Anyway..

Have a look at some icelandic companies, for example www.rafting.is/ is a great company! I met the guys and girls that run the business and they are a great bunch of people! Was great fun to spend time with them.

The rivers that they paddle are cool too! Up to 4+ ish so its good fun.
And really.. the north of iceland is amazing..Well actually the whole island is. :D

To get back to the real topic.. I know that in Sydney there is a rafting company at penrith whitewater course. Should be good too!

www.penrithwhitewater.com.au/ Actually know somebody that worked/works there ( not sure about it)

There should be lots of rafting in South Africa too but i know nothing about it... Maybe Adrian can help you! ;)

Cheers,

Tom

During the UK winter there will obviously be work in South Africa. I'm not sure on what the rates are but if you look at exchange rates between the UK and the South African Rand you'll see that the Pound is much stronger than the Rand and therefore you won't get as much, no doubt. But perhaps you'll find a good experience here. Jobs are tight, all over the world right now, but I can perhaps steer you in the right direction, should SA be on your list of places. Let me know. Always happy to point someone in the right direction.

Oh, and well done on following your dream. You're a better man than me... ;)

It can be hit or miss with the weather in the US. Right now, it is 81 degrees Fahrenheit, but 9 days ago, it was snowing around 4" in NC. I don't think that there's much rafting, because most of the rafters don't want to paddle during the winter, since they generally are less experienced and lack proper gear, because the outfitter will typically provide gear for them. When all you get is a splash jacket and splash pants that only have elastic closures, it won't keep you very dry.

North Carolina has a pretty good selection of rivers, from class II to V+, but you may want to also look at West Virginia, with the Gauley River. Look at the rivers at the top of this page: www.noc.com/

South Africa is like the 33rd driest country in the world ;) But I guess we have some cool whitewater for sure, when it rains! Who is your mate from SA? Brett? At least the boating is mostly warm here B) Where I am, in the Western Cape, the water is damn cold and it receives rain when the rest of the country is bone dry.

Got this today in an e-mail from somebody:

"JOBS ON OFFER

Are you keen on a spending a few months in a stunningly wild part of the world with awesome whitewater? Susuwe Island on the Kunene River is looking for qualified guides to work from May to September. Contact Tiaan on [mail address protected from spambots with javascript] for more information."

The Kunene (or Cunene) River forms the border between Namibia and Angola. Might be worth a shot! :cheer: It's an awesome river in a remarkable area.
