Do i want a play boat or river runner? 16 years 4 days ago #25932

Hi all, iv recently got into white water kayaking with in in the last year.

At the moment i have a robson moonster, but dont like because firstly it is such a budget boat and secondly it is too big!

I am looking for a much smaller, funner boat that get my nose under, do cart weels in the rapids etc.

Obviously my first reaction was to go for a play boat. as im quite tall i dont fit in most small boats, but i found i do fit in the large dagger g force.

However, know im having second thoughts as the g force is an out and out play boat, or so i beleive? And this will limit my options to what i can do with it, for example when i get more experienced i wont be able to do larger water or longer river trips. or am i wrong again?

I have been looking at the dagger honcho or pyranha i:3 as they are more river runners. But i just cant see my self being able to get the nose under and cart wheel on the water level i do at the moment. (i do grade 2-3 at the mo, symonds yat, nene centre.)

Quite a few people iv been padderling with before have the jackson fun series. However i cant fit in the size that would be right for me.

Can anyone give me some advice?

cheers
lucas

Just getting a full on playboat sounds like a good idea to me. it seems to be what your main interest is. How big are you exactly? Some people can probably give you some good recomendations with that information.

Unfortunately - or maybe fortunately, many of us own more than one boat for the exact reasons that you are describing. Gone are the days of the mullet - business in the front and party in the back.

I would suggest going with what you are going to be paddling the most in the immediate future.

All the best,

i paddle an astro 58 and change it for a pyranha recoil L

i'm mostly a creeker, but with the comfort of the recoil, i've rediscover the pleasure of surfing without the soar ankle

yeah, i think i'll grow a mullet

it's all about fun and comfort

if the g-force is a bit to much of a play boat try the wave sport ZG 54 this is a large play boat that isnt as much of a play boat but is still very playfull and is a good river runner .

give it some thought :)

Have a lookat the Fluid Spice Medium. Really good river running kayak with enough volume taken out the ends to make freestyle moves possible. I have managed most of the intermediate freestyle moves in it. For a video clip of what the kayak can do have a look at:

I have a Fluid Spice too -- orange, like in the video -- and it pretty much fits the description of what you're looking for. It's a great boat. Mine is the large. I'm 6'2" and about 185 lbs., and it's plenty big for me.
