All star vs super star. Help! 15 years 11 months ago #26305

Hi everyone,

im 80kilos and 6'2'' so bassically im at the very top end of the all star weight range and at the very bottom of the super star weight range. i was wondering what people think i should do, is it better for me to be heavy in it or too light.

ill be using it for playboating predominatly but will be heading to the Zam near the end of the summer.

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to do some trick, the smaller is the better to begin. I'm 6'1" 80Kg and I have a Riot Nitro 58 (58Gallons). I think that the boat is a little bit to big to do trick easily. If I found a smaller boat that I can fit in, I would definitively change.

I'm about 6", have size 12US feet and weigh 81kg's. I paddle an all star. At your weight it's fine, definitely go for the all star over the super star at that weight. I find it a good sized boat for my weight, definitely you wouldn't want the bigger super star at your weight.

You're slightly taller than me, so the only thing to check is that you fit. 2 inches isn't a lot, and I think you'll fit fine (I feel I have a fair bit of extra room to play with). When fitting it out, I'd recommend the first thing you do is move the happy feet out of the way and sit in the boat. Get the seat in the position you want and get comfortable without the happy feet in there. This way you know how much room you actually have in the hull. Then spend a little time getting the happy feet to fit around this. If you try and do the happy feet first, you'll think you have far less room than you actually do, because the beans just get pushed up in the end of the boat. Doing it at the end once you realise how much room you really have to work with will make it a much smoother process! just my 2cents!

p.s. I actually just checked the Jackson site because I couldn't believe that 80kg would be the top range for this kayak. It actually says 78kg is OPTIMUM playboating weight for the all star. I agree that at 80kg's it's an optimum weight. I'm not sure where they get their river running/overall numbers from. This is a playboat, not a creekboat. At this weight, running rivers would be as good as any other playboat. So long as you don't expect to be running any class 5 creeks in a playboat the all star will be perfect for you.
