Keep in mind that the Solo is a full-on creekboat with a built in hatch. The main factor is how much touring you want to do. I just paddled about 10 miles, most of which was flatwater, in a playboat, but was really tired by the end.

I would take the Pyranha Fusion over the Remix XP, but if you want to get above class III or so you would be better off in the Solo E. I have the small, and wish I had the expedition so I could pack gear easier.

Your other option is to get a basic rec kayak like the Dagger Zydeco, and get a Fluid Solo E. This way, you can paddle almost anything. If you have a bit more money, I would go with a Necky Manitou Sport as a rec kayak.

Keep in mind that you can paddle almost anything in the Solo, but will be limited by a Fusion/Remix XP. The longer boat will also be somewhat harder to turn, but the biggest thing IMO is that you just have that much more boat to deal with.

I agree, if you are going to do long flat section more often get a touring kayak. But if you are planning on doing overnight trips on rough waters get the Solo E. If you want something for both flat sections and rapids get the Solo E.

I have an XP9 and love it. It is capable up to Class 4 and I take mine out into 4 foot storm conditions on the ocean and river any time it get's like that and totally feel the odds are 'even.' I also paddle it up to 12 miles at a stretch and it works well that way. *With your size I would suggest you more look to the XP10, however. You can not beat the quality of LL boats I mean to tell you.

Good luck.

If you go over to LL's website and click into the Grand Canyon video they are all using XP10's and they show them being loaded so heavy you can hardly lift them. Not that I would do that!

When you get it play with tightening the screw/bolt on the skeg lever as it tends to come from the factory a little loose giving you a little drip into the cockpit. Just a turn or 2 tighter and that all completely goes away. The more I pushed my XP over the winter the more I learned about it and the more I liked it (been paddling one for going into my 2nd year now). Lean forward going down the drops and faces of wave trains and engage the rail and you'll see what I mean.

Good luck over there! Post back some time on your impressions.
