Second hand playboat advice? 14 years 7 months ago #30069

Hey everyone, im Eoin :)

Thinking about getting a new second hand playboat , I havnt done much freestyle before but looking to get into it. I can double pump and do stern squirts happy enough just looking for a good boat.

Ive paddled king pins , project 52's(huge for me) etc But looking for suggustions for one that would suit me, it will be used at local playspot and abit of flatwater.

Im 5'10 , im 150 lbs/ 65 kg

Ive had trouble with boats with getting the bow down cause alot ive paddled have just been too big.

Any advice appreciated , i want to get out practicing asap ;)

Hello Im about the same size and have had the same problems so let me throw a few things at you. are you more interested in the shorter "Air" boats or the old school style of cartwheels, squirts, etc.? for Older boats I have always liked the Dagger Ultrafuge and the Wave Sport Ace 4.7 both slicey and low volume in the ends. I have small feet so I can also fit in the Liquid Logic Skip, but not too comfortable like the Dagger & Wave Sport.
for shorter newer boats I have got addicted to the Jackson Star, Short and fast! can stern squirt easily from a dead stop!! and the Jackson Fun's have had some new refinements that you may like. and There have been many boats that I couldnt paddle forward into a bow stall, Until I slid the seat as far forward as my feet would allow, this gave me the leverage needed, and didnt effect the Stern squirts. so give that a try and see if it makes a difference if you havent already done that. Sorry but I dont know much about the newer boats other than the Star (just got the new one, my second star) but comparing the Star to the kingpins, riots, etc. they seem to be the fastest easiest to throw around kinda boats I have ever been in. I would say the Dagger Ultrafuge is one of the easiest flatwater cartwheel boats I have paddled, and surfs great losse but not grabby hull like the Riots tend to have, and Comfortable too. but I just paddled a friends Ace 4.7 a few weeks ago, and may like it better than the Ultrafuge, Have only been in it once and loved it. but at 5'6" the new Star throws around like theres nothing to it. and is the first boat I can stern stall while just sitting in an eddy ( or wherever) no paddling to get up to speed to do it! Hope this helps SYOTR!!!

Sounds great dude , cheers for the help. Im looking more into the newer " Air" boat style I think.

Ive been offered a Fluid Flirt S yesterday , anyone have any experience with them? Would they be easy enough to learn to cartwheel/stall in ?

Can't say I ever tried the Flirt S, but I sure like my L.

The stern has a bit much volume for a playboat, it doesn't squirt as easily as a project or a star. I personally like that, it gives the boat just a bit more stability on the river. For me the front end is easy enough to double-pump or even paddle forward into a stall. If your weight is good for the boat, it should be no problem. The wide ends give it some cartwheeling and stalling stability, although not as much as in older longer slicier boats. As for loops, I'm not there yet. It might be a tad harder than in some more full-on playboats, but it should be doable. I like the boat a lot, if I were you I'dd ask if I could try that boat out.
