What is the highest you would choose to land on flat rock from if you where confident that you could land in the proper bent foward position? there is a drop i want to run that has a lead in landing on a slab of rock

I'm also interested to read what others have to say.
But I guess the answer depends a lot on how the waterfall and rock look like. I would for example not want to fall much higher than the hight of my desk on to the floor sitting in my kayak.

Do you have photos of the drop? It would depend a lot on water level. Pure dry rock? Or with some water there, or quite a bit? :)

I dont think this picture helps much but the bit i am worried about is in the backround above the main drop. I imagine it will have a fair bit of water landing on it, but it will not pool up as the rock is flat and feeds over the drop. The drop is bigger than i looks in the photo's as well. I know there are a lot of factors involved, but i would love to get a general idea of what the back can take, there have been a few cases recently where i have walked stuff on the basis that I have no idea what will happen if I stuff up the landing or end up on rock. Its not something you really want to learn from trial and error.

Looks perfectly fine to me.
Dont forget to stick it up on You Tube when you're done.

So the drop which lands on rock is where I put the pink arrow, right? How high is that drop?

It's really so hard to say without seeing more, and not being there in real life, at real flows. Things always looked very sketch without water. Would it have a lot of water like this?

Not my finest moment but this was 2 days after tearing something in my shoulder - there was a fair bit of water going over, hardly hitting the bottom. :)

Or not too much water, like this:

yea thats the drop. The river hasnt been run yet and and i havent seen in with water, so i guess i will have to go and make a judgment based on how it looks with water. The only thing i rember about the height was that apparently its a little bit smaller than sunshine on the green, which is why I am conserned.

Well, only you will be able to judge whether it's good to go then. Good luck :)

Just a thought or two: if the landing is loose rocks or the slab has potholes, be very aware of any vertical pinning situations. Boofing is not a great idea either (in most cases like this) so maybe around a 45 degree, bow hits the slab first and then lean forward so when your backside hits the rock your spine is protected. Sitting bolt upright could be ugly. I'm not saying it's how to run this drop, as I know nothing about it, and judging from these pictures is not possible but just something to think about :) Have fun, and paddle safe mate!

BTW, looks like you could potentially miss that first bit and put in above the lip of the main drop, I don't know? Could also be an option.

Don't forget that at Sunshine, nobody (intentionally) runs it in the middle. Most boof it to the far left or right, into an eddy. If it's not too big, boofing would probably be better, just to reduce the chance of a bad piton/pin. Either way, it looks like there is a very small margin of error.

@adrian. where is hugh rock sliding?

for the conversation. I would say have a look at running it far river left over the lip and catch the slope out to the bottom, that is if there is enough water and also just as a differnet option. if it has a measuring station 10-15 cumecs could make it work if the water channels well just upstream of the top lip.
Like you all said this will in the end be your call.

He pitoned in very nicely halfway through as you can see, then landed flat on the bottom - first descent of that drop I believe. Sequence on my site. U2 of the Sabie, next to the portage waterfall with the log in it. Portage is river right, this drop is river right of the main drop. You probably know it. This was a winter flow rate. ie. low. :)

we paddled the river today. The top drop is fairly big when we looked at it from the nearer bank, definatly a no go untill the water is way up. We ended up putting in halfway down which is actually a steep slide rather than a waterfall and was sweet, athought there where some bad lines. The whole river was amazing, i might post some pictures soon
