Hi, Has any one compared these two boats ? I weigh about 84 kg and have been thinking about getting one of these boats . I have paddled a large Ammo and liked it but think the medium might suit me more. I have sat in a Detox M and it felt good but have not been able to paddle one. I mainly only paddle grade 3 with the odd grade 4. What is the Detox like at playing? I have seen plenty of video of people river running in them but not playing. How does it compare to the ammo at surfing and rolling etc. Thanks. :cheer:

Hi Bach,

Seeing as I am a Fluid Ambassador you can guess what i'd recommend. Besides i have never paddled an Ammo. They are both similar boats it would seem.
In terms of play ability of the Detox, you won't be throwing any ends in a hole but the hull is great for surfing. Carving is snappy and the boat is really responsive.
Check this out for an idea: Click here

Despite the good carving ability, the Detox really comes into its own while running whitewater. Due to the edged hull direction change is fast and easy, this allows you to make quick turns in technical whitewater. Rolling is easy.
And while the boat isn't quite as forgiving as full on creek boat it will improve your skills as a paddler, i got a bit lazy after spending years in a boat with a semi-displacment hull and the Detox reminded me how important it is to lean in the right directions when facing technical rapids.

Good lines,
Scotty R

Scotty pretty much covered everything, but I'll add some small change to that :)

A mate of mine has the large Ammo, but I never got round to trying it yet. I'm personally not a fan of short, fat boats. The boat is not doing him any favours.. I would go for the Detox, and I'd say that even if I wasn't sponsored by Fluid. Some people like the short, slow boats but I don't. On bigger water you're going to get creamed, in my opinion.

If you're only doing day trips the medium could work nicely. However if you're planning on packing some gear for an overnight trip then definitely go for the large Detox. I'm about 88kg and have the large, I love it. Although it's a personal choice, I would recommend the large anyway for you.

My review on the Detox:

Get the Fluid Element for surfing :)

Hi Adrain, I would get a large Detox but they aren't avaiiable here yet so I would have to go for the medium. Do you think 84kg is too heavy for it? That's what I weigh with out paddling gear. Thanks.

Bach, I'm not sure if there are any Pyranha Ammo M's in Australia. The importer for Pyranha is Kayaking World (google them). But last time I was in their shop I don't recall seeing any Ammo's. Also last time they only ordered in 2 L's, no Medium's. If this is the case, you can write off the Ammo M, which would make your choice much easier!

By the sounds of it you already know where you can purchase a Detox M locally?

You'll make it with 84kg no worries in the medium. But if you throw 15 kg's worth of overnight gear on a bigger volume river certain features will make life more difficult. Sorry it took me so long to reply! I briefly saw this the morning I left to a mates farm for new years and forgot about it. The large Detox's should be there soon I would imagine, unless the importer didn't order another container. You'd have to ask them.
