Ok, so here's the deal: I'm a decent boater with a really solid roll. I was tired of my veteran creek boat and its limited abilities for play, and bought a new Liquidlogic CR125. Sick boat: can't wait to be able to use it. Here's the rub, I can't roll it very well. Does anybody have any good advice for making the transition to the planing hull widebody machine in my back yard a bit easier?

a good hip snap will get the boat most of the way up :)

yeah the creek boats tend to have rounder hulls so are "easier" in a sense to roll, not as dependant on hip flick. whereas the playboats have a very flat hull with sharp edges so you need to have a solid flick to get over this edge and be able to roll well, or lots of brute force, but technique is less painful in the long run.
try working on your hipflick off the side of a pool or a rock or something similar and make sure your head comes up LAST.

Good luck and hope this helps!

Yeah, I had a feeling I had gotten a bit lazy on my hip snap. I guess I'll go to the pool for a few hours tonight and rework that. I'm on the river tomorrow and hoping it won't be a trial by error. My roll is extremely strong, so I was flabbergasted when I struggled in this new boat that's half the size of my old. Thanks for the input.

Size has nothing to do with it, it is shape that makes the difference here.

True, just snap hard and keep ur head down itll be fine, or you just swim either way no problems

It also helps in some cases if youre doing a c to c roll to lean back or lean forward when you come up, it lowers your center of gravity and makes it easier to roll. Also try out some hand paddles, i think they are always easier to learn with

Leanging forward is the way to go. If you are leaning back and miss the roll then you go under with your face exposed. As you set up again you get deeper in the water. I have been in this situation and hit my head. I suggest if you end up back often throw in a low brace sweep that gets you forward and gives you a little bit more pull for a sketchy roll.

How is the boat outfited? Make sure your foot rest is in the right place and your hip pads are tight enough. The main thing I would say is, \"Look at where you are comming from, not where you want to go, when you roll.\" What I mean is look at the water as you come up and out of the water. You are probably reaching with your head. The hip snap thing is true but that just takes practice. Good luck and stay confident. Every roll you miss brings you closer to the one you will hit.
