Playboat 18 years 10 months ago #7379

I currently have BCU 2 Star and am about to take 3 Star, but cannot yet roll. I would like to get into a playboating, but i dont know whether it is worth it, as i cannot yet roll. Do you think i will need to roll before i buy a playboat?

Thanks
Dan

No, but rolling certaainly helps, bear in mind playboats are harder to roll than other styles of boat.

Playboating does tend to need a lot of rolling. Particularly when you're a beginner, like me, and go through mild feelings of elation just from coming off a wave the right way up!

I agree - put the effort into learning to roll. Your playboating progression will be seriously hampered until you can roll confidently. Get some good lessons and put the pool time in - it will be worth it. And HAVE FUN! :roflol:

I started back paddling just over a year ago after a 10 year + break; we are talking way back when rotobats were considered play boats. When I started back paddling I had the basic kayaking skills and that was about it. Had to learn to roll etc. Decided that I would buy a playboat from the outset to force me to raise my game quickly. Started of with a Pyranaha S6 and then moved onto a Jackson All Star (which really helped). It paid off, and now I can roll on my left, right with a variety of techniques (screw, reverse screw, back deck and hand roll).. simply because when practicing kart wheels, stalls etc, you fall in every which way and learn to roll accordingly.

If you really committed to getting into playboating, get a good playboat and the rolling will come quickly.

P.S. I spent months last year learning how to kart wheel. Decided to start asking people for help and get some lessons. Within days I was pulling multiple ends. Moral of the story - it is faster learning from someone elses mistakes than it is from your own. Join a good club, take lessons, learn from books and videos, it will dramatically improve your paddling.
