dagger RPM 18 years 10 months ago #7478

I want to buy a boat so that I can get started really kayaking, but I am not sure what to get.. I was told not to get a playboat as my first boat, and it seems like a dagger RPM is a good beginners boat. I have, however, rolled in multiple playboats, but only in flat water. Is it better to get a boat like the dagger RPM as a first boat, or should I just go for it and buy a playboat?
Cheers

RPM is a good kayak, don't get me wrong, but it is VERY much "old school".
And what is it U want to learn - river-running, playboating, surfing...?
These days I'd say to go for river-play kayak (that is unless U want to get into creecking), something with a flat hull (RPM has a round bottom), not too small and forgiving and easy to roll. The "Easy" series (WaveSport) R a real clasic for that, though every kayak brand has someting for a beginner.
And one more thing - I'd look for a second hand boat.
The most important - Wellcome to paddling - ENJOY!!! ;-)

If so - my advise is to go for a forgiving playboat - there is a whole line of those: river - play, forgiving, easy to roll, stable enough and able to do basic flat wave and hole moves. The idea is - U can start leaning to paddle and progress to some play quite fast. Otherwise U'll have to change your boat in order to learn the play basics.
Once again - the Easy series (Easy, BigEasy) by WaveSport are all that. BUt by no means - don't get locked on to them only, look aroung - try boats.
Anyway, I don't agree with the opinion that U shouldn't get a playboat as your fist kayak - just dont get anything radical. And U should take the boat stats and your weight and hight into consideration.
Cheers.

Dagger ooutlaw, honcho or showdown(dependinng on ur size)

maybe a g-force, crazzy 88 or a kingpin as a playboat

remember, you've got to learn in it, demo a load of boats thats the best way of finding out

I think you just get whatever you want. If you can roll, then you will grow into the boat. Honestly tho', what do a bunch of people know on the internet. Ask your friend, what she thinks. I think starting in a playboat is great. If you are 120lbs to about 160lbs I would recomend the ZG48 playboat over others, I think that this is a very user friendly boat, that is also good for river-running. Plus you could find this boat used.Boats like the Project, star, and 420 may be tough to start out in. The ZG is really sweet. Pyrannah's outfitting sort of falls apart. Wavesport has very comfy outfitting.

dagger juice. its a good river runner and can do some basic playboating move with the right technique. outfitting isnt so good though so you would have to change that.

I would think that as much as you like to use letter abbreviation, you would know that it is the EZ and Big EZ (and Super EZ)

lots of people said you should get a river running playboat such as the ina zone, don't, if you do want to get into playboating you wil not be able to learn any of the moves and will be stuck with a boat which is built on compromise. As somebody else said you really need a forgiving play boat (don't go for an older riot like the air or a dragorossi) The orbit is a nice boat but it has very little primary stability so although it is not too easy to capsise it feels really tippy. The are however lovely little boats which I learned to cartwheel in, although this may have had something to do with it becoming similar to a squirt boat when I sat in it

about 1 year ago i got in to kayaking and quickl decided playboating was for me i joined a club and used their methord air for a while i got a roll and all the braces sorted, that was a lot of fun but then i wanted to start playing so i decided to start looking for a boat a lot of people told me to start of in river running play boat, but one of the people at the club said why waist your money and get some thing you wil get board of so i got my self a jackson allstar. after a perieod of getting it all wrong and a few swims i now have a bom proof roll (well i hope id do). im now playing around on hurly and haveing a great time. all i am saying it might be harder at first but wou will quickly adapt and start to progress.

but before gting a boat demo demo demo !!!!!

if you are considering a rpm you should try a pyrahna inazone there similar tyes of boats but the inazone is far looser but slightly harder to roll

The Orbit 47 is an awsome boat.
It is definately a full on playboat. (if it is in good shape and complete then 450 is in the ballpark)
Take it out before you buy it though and see if you like it!

Everyone is telling you the same thing over and over again. Get out and demo as many boats as you can beforeyou buy one.

I am really partial to the Jackson Fun series. good alround boat, lightweight and comfortable. (But that is my opinion)

DEMO DEMO DEMO then buy what you like best!

Hey, Phaedra!
Sorry , have been out of touch, spent a week on the Coruh river in Turkey - great fun!
Congrats on the new boat, enjoy - that's the main thing!
I am a bit far from your area (ye, well I live in Israel...) - but if you ever here - come kayaking.
Have a blast!
