Has anyone ever tried this:

The idea is to tie 4 ropes to a big plank and submerge the plank just behind a bridge. The idea with the 4 ropes is that if you make sure that none of the ropes are parallel, the whole thing should hold itself in the right place.

if all 4 ropes are adjustable, i would thing it should be possible to make a nice wave.

probably requires strong material (including the bridge railing :roflol: ).

a bit dangerous maybe for people coming from upstream...

any thoughts?

hadn't thought of that. probably depends on the nagle of the planks as well...

what if the bridge is really low?

Jeffthebigguy,

thanks for your feedback, but you are wrong. I tested my design in a small model (1:20) and it works.

Depending on the angle of the plank, I can position it anywhere between the bottom of the river and halfway out of the water.

I hope I'll get a chance to test it full scale this summer.

Anyone interested in helping (switzerland)?

Jeroen

Surely, if you threw the plank of the power of the water would keep it in place? If not, It isnt that har to throw a few ropes and rocks on it.

U can also try a triangle, i think that the water will push it to the bottom, and u have no dangerous vertical water falling somting like this: /\

So, did it work? It would be awesome if it did. Overhere in Holland we could use a few extra playspots..

yeah, like here in zürich. bremgarten is more than 15 minutes away, terrible ;-)

no i haven't been able to try it yet. probably also because i'm not as desparate as i would be in holland :roflol:

so maybe you guys could try. main things imho:

- water should be fast
- channel should be narrow, so you can direct most of the water over the plank
- the channel should be tree-free
- the channel should be swimmer-free

cheers,
jeroen

Perhaps I'll give it a go and work some stuff out this winter.

The main problem overhere is finding a suitable river hat does flow but is narrow enough to channel he water. One thing I am thinking of is mounting a board/plank on the bank of our local river Maas (I am located just South of Rotterdam) and see if that helps to build a small playwave.

The Dutch freestyle/paddling community I talked to (see also www.kanoforum.nl/) wasn't overly enthousiastic but I guess it's worth a try. Worst case scenario is that I really have to work on my flatwater moves :roflol:

one thing i can recommend is to try a small model first, so you get some feeling of what will happen. i use a 20x10cm piece of plastic.

roermond might be a place to build this thing, or any other place where water is flowing out at high speed, like at the 'gemaal' (where was that again?) or just behind any water power plant...

Roermond has its Fishsteps (playak.com/article.php?sid=229) and the "Gemaal" (is it called a Weir in English? Not sure) is probably at Halfweg, near Haarlem/Amsterdam.

I am located just under Rotterdam and there is a flat river close by. No suitable bridge though so it has to be something I can mount on the river banks. The idea to make a small model first is probably a good one. At least it's a good way to spend all the plywood in the garage. ;-)

here in texas we have one similar to that we call it a tumelo this is wear we put it www.americanwhitewater.org/photos/?photoid=7608 we just conect it to the dam by chains. i'm not sure how they do it but they do. it makes the hole alot skickier though sometimes we have to hold the sides of the tumelo so that when someone is getting munched we can just pull it up out of the water making the hole turn back to its old form so that the paddler can flush out even though the hole can still hold you without tumelo. tumelo just makes the hole better

I was thinking something along the lines of just making a steep slanting rock or piece of concrete on the bottom, and at the bottom of the ramp just making the bottom flat so I guess the profile would look something like:

What I was thinking was something like this:

I've seen what Jeroen drew being used on a canal in Munich by some board surfers to make a hole surfable.

One plank about 3 or 4 metres long and 300mm wide was connected to two ropes; each rope split into two at the connection point to the plank. Each of the main ropes had a pulley system on them in order to facilitate adjustment of rope lengthwhile plank is in the flow.
Both these ropes were then connected at one point on a bridge piller, pretty much at water level.

Here's some photos I took of the difference it made to the hole.

Before - Hole

After - Wave

Hope this helps
