Playboat for big paddler 18 years 7 months ago #9346

Hiya, Im getting back into kayaking after a couple of years break and Im after a new boat, my Whiplash is a bit old and dated now.

Im after a park n play that I can run the odd river on. But here's the stumbling block, im 6ft 1, 240lbs with size 11 feet so my choices are limited.

Ive narrowed it down to the Airhead, Fluid Flirt (large - obviously!) or the Project 62.

Does anyone have any reccomendations?

Any advice is welcomed, thanks in advance.

Every large paddler that i know who owns a Large Fluid flirt is super happy with it, in fact I've never heard a complaint about the large.
This might change after some people read this post of course

But like it has been said so many times before DEMO, DEMO, DEMO and find the boat that suits you best.

Nevertheless, if you want to know anything more about fluid don't hesitate to ask.

Good lines and big air

After I had a look at the Super Star's specs I thought I was too heavy for it.

I like the shape of the Flirt and Airhead, just need to find a couple to demo.

Cheers for the suggestions lads.

I demoed a flirt and my feet kept falling asleep in like 5 minutes

I am 6'4\", size 11 feet and weigh 83 kilo's (so I am lighter than you) and squeeze myself in to a Flirt Medium so the Large should be big enough for you.

To be honest, the Medium is not super comfy for me after half an hour or so but I only use that boat for flatwater on my local pond. If I had to paddle rivers in it I would go for the Large.

But like ScottyR said: demo, demo, demo

I am a larger boater (6'4\", 245, size 13 feet) and just got a Fluid Flirt L. I am fairly new to playboating, but it was the only \"comfortable\" playboat that I was able to find and I think it is going to be a great boat to progress in. It surfs really well and is very stable. The stern has quite a bit of volume for a playboat, but it is pretty slicey, so I haven't had a problem getting the back end under to do stern stalls. I don't think you will have any problems cartwheeling/bowstalling/looping this boat with the right technique.

I always recommend demoing as many boats as possible, but I would have to say that the Flirt might be exactly what you are looking for...

Cheers for alll the replies. I think the Flirt might be the one, not saying anything until I have demo'd a few boats.

Thanks again.

Or wait untill the Dagger Agent 6.4 is on the market. They say it will be a great boat for larger kayakers.

I'm 6'4 185 and I've got a Riot Air 60. She's a good boat if you can find one used. It's the most comfortable boat that I've ever sat in, although this isn't saying much considering that every boat prior to this one put at least one leg to sleep within 20 min.

Hi, I'm 6'3'', 180 lbs and I'd agree with IanM, I have a Riot Air 60, am a little on the light sidew for it, but it's comfortable, has great wave ability and good pop in a hole, although ends aren't exactly a piece of cake in it...

Sadly Im too heavy for the Riot.

Whats the S6X like then? Anyone have any opinions on that little thing?

Re:Playboat for big paddler 18 years 7 months ago #9421

Pyranha's S6X was not a very good design, i think they tried to be a bit too inovative with the hull and other tit-bits. They rectified their mistakes with the S6F though.
Again this is an opinion but I didn't like the S6X when i used it; found it very slow on a wave, hard to release and not very balanced on ends. With in 2 months it broke (cockpit ring basically tore right off).

You might have better luck however.

Re:Playboat for big paddler 18 years 6 months ago #9645

here are your options for a real chance at moves.

Super ez is super comfotable but lacking for loopps

Super Fun is awsome but some say doesnt surf well

Airhead is great but hard to get down rivers

Project 62 is a little tight

Re:Playboat for big paddler 18 years 6 months ago #9646

Cheers for that. Id like to demo the flirt (l) and Airhead, I rekon its down to one of them really.

Would love to give looping a go, even if Im not capable (yet!) id like a boat that was.

Im suprised you say the Project is tight, thought id have a bit of room in there. Saying that ive not sat in it yet.

Re:Playboat for big paddler 18 years 6 months ago #9664

ran rivers for a week with a guy who was small for the 185 and he got out about every hour or so to stretch his feet. Id bet size elevnes would be stretch. Waing might be a good option, the dagger agent has laod of footroom supposedly and the Roning 59 or whatever the gallon number is is coming out soon as well. Jackson jsut redid all there baots, maybe one of the new funs or the stars. If you want a downriver playbaot the larger CRossriver from ll would probably be good choice. i personally wouldnt go withe super ez, i paddled an ez and though it was really slow, really slugish and didnt seem to engage in any one thing. STill, its a classic, just a limiting one.
