I have a good oportunity to buy a punk rocker second hand. My questions: Is it a good boat for a beginner. And how close can a experienced kayaker go to the upper weight limit?

I have a punk rocker. It's probably a great beginner boat, it's very easy to roll and easy to paddle. When you do get your roll down, you may be inclined to get a playboat as well to make things a bit more fun. Weight ranges are not as much for experience as they are for just your weight. Jackson says 80-165. That sounds pretty accurate to me for the boat. I would probably look at another boat if you were above 150 though
