A nice place to build confidence & get a feel for moving water. However, beware! Afew days rainfall on the River Itchen can increase the flow considerably making the weir more retentive than you might have imagined.
I took a spill whilst surfing a sit on top in the foam pile & a couple of weeks earlier been washed out mainstream without any difficulties. On this occasion there had been several days rainfall making the weir grabbier than usual.
I tought I'd surf a sit on top again & took a spill in the main foam pile before I could recover with a brace. The weir decided to keep a hold of me resulting in a rescue situation. I took on a lot of water before I could fight my way out. The sense of PANIC was very frightening.
Thought that this may be of use to anyone who's not paddled this weir before.
