Boats Database: Dagger Approach

We've combined the best features of a whitewater river runner, and a fast recreational kayak. We came up with a lightweight hybrid for paddlers of all skill levels. Great for a range of paddling environments from protected waters to a fast moving river to whitewater kayaking. Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too.

If you're happy, you're successful.

Dagger Approach 16 years 2 months ago #31273

Hi,

Fairly new to this marvelous sport and ready to make the switch from a sit on top. Looking to do some gentle river running and some short touring as well as having fun in the surf as i live on the coast. Looking at three kayaks at the moment and would appreciate any advice. The kayaks i`m looking at are the Pyranha G3, Dagger approach 10 and the Perception carolina 12. As you may spot the kayaks are on the large side just like me. I would be grateful for any advice or to hear opinions from anyone owning one of the above boats.

Many thanks Gav.

Look into the LL Remix XP9 or XP10 , Jackson Allwater 9 or 10 , and the Pyranha Fusion . I would not consider the Approach's outfitting to be suitable for whitewater, since I think that there are foot pegs instead of a bulkhead, the seat hangs down from the cockpit rim, the thigh braces are terrible, and there are no hip pads. The Pyranha G3 is a pure whitewater boat, and the Perception Carolina 12 is a rec/day touring boat. I would get the Remix XP9 out of all of these because it is the most capable at whitewater, and the skeg goes down less than the Approach or the Master TG, and it essentially makes it a V-shaped hull, which means that it would be much better on flatwater, as well as it would be less likely to get damaged if you accidentally leave it out when you exit your kayak. Here's Shane Benedict's blog posts on the Remix XP series .
