Boats Database: Dagger RPM Max

If you took every RPM ever sold and lined them up, you’d have a whole lotta irate paddlers standing around. Seriously though folks, the RPM remains the best selling kayak ever. That’s ever. Wanna know why? It starts with a stable and forgiving design that makes the RPM ideal for beginners who seek a versatile river runner with a displacement hull. Add carving performance and solid front and back surfs with dynamic stern squirts and you can’t go wrong. Just for good measure, you’ll also get a thermoformed seat and adjustable backband. The classic paddler loves us for this one.

If you're happy, you're successful.

Dagger RPM Max 16 years 1 month ago #31277

Could use some advice. Just getting ready to buy something a bit more than the rec kayak I've had. Always considered an RPM max. (I'm 5'-8" 220 lbs). I'm in a group of paddlers that does a lot of fairly flat water and occasional 2 to 3+'s.

I understand a rpm is fairly fast on flat water, easy to roll, and a good river runner. BUT .... Finding an RPM max is tough.

I have a chance to get a dagger cfs ($300), and have read that its a great beginners creek boat. not sure if it's good for going down a lasy river with my buddy's.

I love being in swift water. Guided on rafts for about 5 years,a and fell in love with it.

Any advice? CFS (creeker) vs. RPM Max (river runner)

THANKS!

are these sim to the cfs? I see the xp10 is longer and has a skeg wich i'musre makes it good on the flats. Problem, I can't afford a new boat. And I can't say i've ever seen a liquidlogic used for sale? Hard to find?

I doubt that there will be an XP10 yet, but there may be in the coming months. Also, try craigslist.org and search kayaks

I was recently involved in buying a small fleet of RPMs (7) for scout use. I have to say that they are great boats for beginners and incredibly easy to roll (we've managed to get four or five lads of about 12-13 rolling on their 3rd time in a kayak, though these are those who take to it naturally). I've never paddled one on moving water, but the livelyness of the stern as well as the speed and stability would indicate that you should be able to have a bit of fun in one whilst not having to be on top of your game all of the time; a fact born out by their popularity.

I suppose the difficulty in getting hold of them is down to people wanting to hang on to them, which should speak volumes about the boat. In the UK, a brand new RPM max in Legend spec would set you back about £430, which is just a couple of dollars off twice the cost of that cfs at the moment, so, if that's your budget, you'd have to have a pretty good reason to go for a new RPM rather than a second hand boat.

I paddled an RPM for years and it would be a great 1st WW boat for you. Compared to a simi planning or planning hull boat I don't know if I would call the RPM "stable" or "forgiving" as it comes with it's own gremlins on the flat rear deck, BUT........

I say this not because of it's forgiving design. This boat will make you learn how to do eddy turns, peelouts, ferries and all the basics.... and do them correctly, the way they should. If not? you will learn the correct way to roll in a hurry. The RPM does not allow for sloppy eddy entry or exits, so your roll will come along way, in a short time. This boat is extreamly fast, surfs well. It is also long enough and tracks well for those long flat water section. When you master this boat and move up to the designs of the newer boats it will be a breeze.

All the same can be said for the CFS. Not sure about it being a "Beginners Creek Boat"? The CFS was a class V, steep creeking machine in it's day. You don't see a lot out there anymore, not because it was a bad boat but mostly due to attrition. Lets face it, creek boats that are really used don't last much more than a few seasons. Something about rocks vs plastic. It would also suit your needs and would run rivers and flat water well.
