good place to practise basic white water skills on a rapid whichis just grade 2 there are several waves to surf on can be very busy during the summer months. Dont bother going when the river wye is high as the rapid washes out. theres a beach at the bottom after the island on river right bank.

It would be worth doing it as trip from lower lydbrook down a nice grade 1 section to get the group practise breaking in and out and using waves. You will go under a green bridge nearing the end a couple of km down streak is the seal launch rock on river left a green pontoon is normally in the water right above it beach river right (opposite rock)

Few hundred metres down stream you will see the concrete steps of Wye Deans carpark the rapid is around 400m down stream with a path back to the top to make paddling back to the car park easier.

Or you could continue down to monmoth (what out for rowers strange breed of people who travel fast looking backwards there have been many crashes!)

I hope this helps you can also get info in the Welsh white water guide

Have Fun:D

Great place to get started, my first white water, took my nephew (8 year old) there in the summer to get him paddling, family tradition now... We were up and down the rapids all day, can be bumpy in places it is a beautiful place and I to would put in it lower lydbrook and paddle down on the first day. Great pub at the saracens head or paddle on down to redbrook.

Yea, Symonds yat is a beautiful place. But the put in at Lower Lydbrook has recently closed to canoeists.

A better spot is just below kerne bridge. Read more here.

Does make the trip feel considerably longer in low levels from kern in medium levels all the little weirs start to produce little waves great for intro to using waves for ferrying and playing!

Hope you have a fun days paddle clean water and some great wildlife, views aslong as the clouds arnt down:roflol:

Symonds Yat is a truelly beautiful place to go, perfect a relaxed into to whitewater. However, do not go there in Summer, or at any other times when water levels may be low. Im not just saying this so that your shiny boat and paddles dont get scraped on the rocks, but it is actually much harder to learn on such low levels. This is, sadly, the only time i have been able to get there, so can't really compare it, just took in the scenery....

Symmons Yat is truely Great, lovely paddle from Kerne Bridge to the Yat and a great introduction to running water, lots of possibilitys, and lots of bloomin mindless ferry drivers can't wait to see one of them down the rapids lol

I recently went and found it great fun although a bit panicy as was my first time but yeah worth everything a real rave of a canoeing location
