As a complete novice and first time paddler I thought it would be a good idea to book a 1* bcu course just to get the feel of things and try to do things \"properly\" as apposed to what I normally do and jump in both feet first, so am now awaiting the course in a couple of weeks time, so a quick question what can I expect?? I have no idea what they are going to show us, ask us to do, or what they expect we should already be able to do, if anything. And also is it likely that we fail on our first attempt or is this very rare ? Anyway sorry for the dumb questions, and as a first time user of this forum then Hi everyone, it looks like a nice place to hang out :lol:

Hello there RadoAds and welcome to the forum =)

You can find the whole 1* Syllabus here on the BCU Website: www.bcu.org.uk/bcu/sitePDFs/1-4%20star%20closed%20kayak.pdf

Basically, 1 Star is the 'Cycling Profeciency' of kayaking =D It is very easy. It's mainly being able to paddle forwards, backwards, sideways, low brace (Support stroke) and capsize without panicing (Most 1* try and get out their boat before their upside down hehe).

There's not much to it and it is reasonably hard to fail unless you have absolutely no co-ordination.
