Depends a bit on how much you have paddled at llangollen, just once or more often, and did you play in every wave and hole you could find or just paddle down stream and eddy out glad to have made it without swimming?

There are different bits on the tryweryn, so you wouldn't have to do the whole thing if you went there to go paddling. Also depends if you are going with other experenced boaters or by yourself so to speak.

Start on the lower section makesure you get out and INSPECT Bala Mill falls portage if you dont like the look of it, if this goes ok maybe go and have a look at the top section it is more continous and rescues are a pain in the arse, swims hurt as its rocky shallow and flows quite quickly.

Canolfan tryweryn isnt going any where so I would recommend practise lots before maybe go to the nene and HPP much friendlier for playboating etc and get on some real rivers aswell!

Remember the three star award is a flat water award!

At the end of the day only you can answer this question for yourself, the car parking is free, look and walk down the whole course Ive spoken to people in similar situatiion as yourself paddled eddylines then scared themselves stupid on CT and didnt have a clue what they were doing not a place you want to be in this situation.

Once you are happy paddling grade 3 rivers and have paddled lots and can get every eddy then re assess your situation

i was in almost the exact same situation was 3* (still am even though i did my 3* on moving water). i had run symonds yat and hpp and nene possibly a few more (the ure i think). i am the same weight as you and in the same boat. start from below chapel if you dont feel to comfortable and scout bala mill falls if you get that far. i didnt find it to bad (running from the top) so long as youre confident and know where you going which eddies extra to go in. i almost had a pretty bad expirence in the hole by ski jump so dont go in there and dont go in chapel nither. if in dout scout. overall it depends on youre abilitly and confidence and your paddling friends in case you get into poo.

have a look at the course before you do anything and only paddle if u feel happy. if you are not comfortable get on at the rafting station and then paddle to bala but watch out for bala mill falls it isnt that bad but inexperience you could swim it i have seen 2 star go down it when the river was at 10 cumics! but always be confident

See how you feel when you get there, take a good long look and watch plenty of paddlers going down, don't just hang around the cafe thinking it all looks good walk to the top, you can view the whole route along the bank.

Agree with the others start on the lower section, avoid chapel and inspect bala, went there with a group and took a 65 year old down who had never paddled anything like that before, but, there was lots of bank support and top paddlers in the water, he did it with a grin the shole way...

Seriously though, I took a south african mate with me who has paddled some big water and he lost two teeth and got a lovely shiner. Would upload a picture but he would kill me ;-)

If you have a moments doubt get back in the car there is plenty of nice water around there, the lower section is great for starting but bala needs to be inspected.

Oh and watch out for rafts cause sure as hell they won't watch out for you... Actually that is probably unfair, once they are barreling down they just cant stop as easily. They do not do the lower section so you are ok there.
