Well after passing my 1* a few weeks ago and feeling the need to do some post-christmas spending Ive just ordered my first boat - a Pyranha H3 255 - it should be here in a week or 2 due to the new year period and then its just a matter of spending some more on all the other bits and pieces Im going to need. I cant wait to get on the water and get some practice in because as some may remember after the 1* I came away feeling pretty poor when it came to keeping the boat in a straight line let alone anything else. Oh well happy days to come :) I hope

Of course symetry is very important in keeping the boat straight, but also here is a good tip: keep you paddle more perpendicular to the surface of the water. This will help keep you from doing a sweep like strokes and turning the boat. Last but not least your paddle should come out of the water once it reaches your hips. If you paddle past your hips the boat will start to turn to the other side from which the paddle is on. So the most efficient way of paddling is keep your arms out in front of you and reach forward, use torso rotation to generate most of you power/torque, and take the blade out of the water as it reaches your hips.

Good luck and congratulations!

Cheers,
Boe

Thanks for the advice, I cant wait to put it all into practice and try and get to a level where I feel comfortable on the water rather than feeling like an idiot floundering about without a clue.;)

also make sure that your padle stroke dont come from hip rotations. You want to keep the upper half of your body independent of the lower half.
