BCU 3 Training and assessment 18 years 9 months ago #9746

Hi ppl

does anyone know where the best place and the cheapest is for me to do the bcu 3 star training and assessment. The place near me is trying to charge £180 for the training and 180 for the assessment a total rip off. I would like to do the training and assesment in a weekend or even in one day if possiable. Any help would be great

Thanks alot

hi

dunno where in the uk you are but there are two places i would reccommend in the south,
firstly, imo the bettter of the two, kayakojacko

www.kayakojacko.com

secondly, the lesser but still really good, longridge scout boat centre

www.aqqq09.dsl.pipex.com/index.shtml

this probably only helps if youre in the south, but even still

good luck

Allo J,

Try www.southwatersports.co.uk! Think the course price is around £95.00 for a 15hrs course.

Good luck

it is a two day course does the price include accomodation and food etc? is the price for a group? I was old to wait till easter and do the UKCC level3 kayak instead as I would have to do a day top up from the bcu scheme

I did mine at woodmill (www.woodmill.co.uk) had a great time, good instruction £130 for 2 days including assesment you can camp in their grounds bring your own grub but tea coffe supplied, only problem is you have to get yourself to southampton.

Are you sure kayako is 180, I am sure that was the total cost over 2 days if in a group. have you called them?

Personally I have not used kayako but I have freinds who have and have always rated it top class. Also seen them out on rivers doing training and the groups always seem to be smiling.

Might do the drop in day aswell, always good to get some tips, if I can only get their website to work properly! I would give em a call to check that price, it might be an old page on the site.

MayB c u hurley

Chertsey is my local jaunt but have not been there for a few weeks.

Pics here wwtccnews.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_wwtccnews_archive.html

it is a pourover so ok for practice, if the surf is rubbish this weekend I will be at chertsay or hurley on sunday. Can get sticky when high and don't go near the gate as I have recently seen people dragged underneath with nasty results.

Can you paddle alone on weirs or is that too dangerous ?

Re:BCU 3 Training and assessment 18 years 9 months ago #9829

erm that is a really hard one to answer. Can you, yes, should you, no.

It depends on your ability but being good does not make you indistructable, there can be a lot of debry in weirs if you hit your head on a partially submerged log you will be out cold. if you have a dislocaion and can't right yourself or bail then you are in big trouble.

judging from the posts you are new to this, so, whatever you do don't attempt it unles there is someone there to keep an eye out, all the places you mentioned are pretty friendly, so you won't have a problem.

But, Basically don't do it.

Sorry I thought you where talking about the level 3 coach award which seems reasonable at £180. the star award can be done by a level 3 or 4 coach with an assessor grade a1*. Most clubs have coaches or know of coaches who can assess for these awards.

Look at the local clubs in your area and finds the one that suits you then join them

But paddling is not just about star awards either

so go have fun on a nice river

Hi guys I've just had a look at the price list on the Kayakjacko website and 3* training and assessment costs 45 quid.

A BCU Level 3 course refers to a Level 3 coaching qualification (which is why it is two days and costs a bit more and you need a traing course and an assessment course).
