Playak Weekly Digest - week 29, 2024
Playak Weekly Digest
The world's top paddling news in week 29, 2024.
Message of the Day
Retiring News Flash and Weekly Digest mails in August 2024
I developed the News Watch service and the News Flash mailings back in 2004, when social media hardly existed, people actually browsed the web on desktop computers, and e-mail was the most relevant service for personal communication. These days people spend more time on social media than websites, and use apps on phones and tablets to do so. In personal communication, messengers (X, Facebook, Signal, Whatsapp, Discord, Telegram, …) have become much more important than e-mail for most people. Since 2004, I have used homemade robots to gather paddling news, and from that flood of news I hand-picked the most relevant headlines 365 days per year. In the past 15 years I’ve paid several assistants for this daily work. I’ve found it hard to stop this service, as so much love and sweat went into building and maintaining it, but now the time has come to recognize that it is just not worth it anymore. The above is how I assess the situation. If you see it differently, please let me know. I hope you have enjoyed these services during the past 20 years. Cheers, Jeroen

Trash Paddler Coasting Fort to Fort

Canoe Guy BC How to Make Pocketed Inwales for a Double Gunwale Canoe
Canoe Guy BC - In the early days of wood-canvas canoe construction (late 1800’s until about 1906), builders (primarily in up-state New York and Maine) tried to emulate the birch bark canoes in the region. Like birch bark canoes, they constructed their hulls with cedar ribs and planks. They also emulated the look of the gunwales. The inwales and outwales of birch bark canoes are lashed together and the rib-tops are whittled to wedges which are forced up between the inwales and outwales.

PaddlingLight Lake Superior Circumnavigation Speed Records
PaddlingLight - Recently, someone who had circumnavigated Lake Superior by sea kayak claimed to be the fastest person who had done it. He was incorrect, and likely was incorrect because an internet search didn’t easily pull up other people’s Lake Superior circumnavigation speed records.
Paddling Magazine Navigating the Rising Costs of Wilderness Rescue
Paddling Magazine - Nearly a quarter of a century has passed since I first apprenticed as a sea kayak instructor with Bruce Lash, a spunky firefighter who was among the first North Americans to earn the British Canoe Union’s vaunted 5-Star Sea award, which is regarded as the most rigorous sea kayak training in the world.
