We use an old 12 ft climbing sling that we run through the grab loops and around our torso.

Reed Chillcheater Have come up with a cool backpach system for carring your plastic dream machine.
It hooks into the cockpit and lashes round the hull.
simple works best.

hi, salamander makes a nice carry system so does shivaoutdoors. stows away easy and fits any kayak. carries definatly up to 70kgs without any problems (apart from your own back).

sorry...

we are just on the work of updating our shopingcart with all the products...
but i was busy kayaking... ;-)
so check it out now..

we worked on this product for some time and tested in on various expeditions over the years.

so it does work (payload of 60kgs+) and stows easily into your boat, doesn't have any fancy bs to add weight.

THe sling work pretty good.... But a two man carry always works good if you got two ppl.... goes easier on your back....

the hk stonehenge looks reasonable but i saw a better version on LVM when they ran north cherry creak. it had decent thick padded rucksack shoulder straps. the week long expedition loaded boat was carried vertically with your back into the cocpit slightly and the front of the boat slightly over hanging your head so that you head was inside the cockpit. this seemed like a better centre of gravity which would be easier to carry, i think it was home made but i see no reason to stop a company such as yak or IR from making one.
it could be made to clip into the seat or cockpit of a boat

u can also put oam on your head and the backrest of your seat on your head :!:
walks easy and looks funny
a mile is not a problem at that way. u can do it on difference ways (shoulders inside or outside) but u chose the one u like the most

i have a really short boat, so it worked really good but im sure a longer one would also work, just take a backpack with rigid support on the back and wedge it in ur cockpit, horizontal or vertical doesnt really matter and then use roof rack straps or rope to secure it, usually 2 or 3 peices works good for me. also this technique of strapping to a backpack works great for anything, bike, suitcase... as long as u use all the support straps around ur waste and such, doesnt strain your back to much

I suppose this is a perfect place to get some feedback on a new design project that im starting because this is the exact problem I intend to tackle with my senior thesis in industrial/product design at OSU.

I~m still in early stages of the project and i~ll start getting heavy into it in the spring, mainly because i~m studying in brazil right now. The main goal for me is to create a design within the cockpit that transforms or reconfigures into a backpack while keeping extra weight or equipment almost negligable.

Any support would be appreciated even if it is a comment. I am looking into contacting companies for the purpose of research support or financial backing. If you just want to email me or post a comment that would be great. Let me know what you think and I can post sketches and things also fromt time to time as the project develops.

Hey Jeremy, I just made a post before coming into this topic - "Storage and Transportation Device". I am studying Product Design Engineering and I am looking at taking a user centred approach to develop a storage and transport system. Your project is slightly different to mine but I think there will be some similar areas that would be good to talk to each other about.

My project is still in the preliminary stages, but I will be in touch as it develops. My email is [mail address protected from spambots with javascript] , I look forward to hearing from you.

if you go on www.pyranha.com/osb/showItem.cfm?Category=2 in the picture you can see they have used some straps to turn the kayak into a backpack tou could try that

The approach the dude with the green boat is taking seems better to me:

(1) Chances ar smaller you hit your heel at the boat,
(2) The bottom of the boat is probably more comfortable on your back.

It is probably more comfy when you attach the straps at the rim of the cockpit (where the spray skirts goes).

Try getting the rim of the cockpit on the foam of your bouyancy aid. (presuming you wear one)

Or just build macho muscule.

Or became ambi so when shoulder gets tired swap around.

Those Reed things do excist. I saw one in the reed catalouge this year.

When i've had enough of shouldering the boat, which is usually when it's full of food, sleeping equipment, clothes and water, then i have a fantastic idea...... DRUM ROLL........ I attach a sling to one grab loop and drag the damn thing

i don't thinnk suck it up is the right answer. i'm tired because i carried my kayak for about 1/4 mile over boulders, to run a rapid again, i was pretty tired from that, plus a big carry in and out to get to and from the river. Then i went rockclimbing for a few hours. Let me say i was beat. Then I woke up sunday, and went creeking and carried my creeker up a mountain. Argh 168 ft per mile is so worth the one mile portage when you get to boat it down!! lemme say I was Pretty sore this morning.

My trick with a heavy boat is put it on top of my head like a canoe, over my helmet. It works very well on flat ground, but is still hard on my lower back. I just like to switch it up!!

the thing that works is on our website...it's called yakpack...

i do plenty of expeditions and as mentioned hire up it does the job..
packs decently small and is fitted (after some practice) in less then 5 minutes on your kayak,.

this obviously is not a tool for portaging..better drag, push, rope your boat. for shorter stretches (1mile) i wouldn't even bother to put it on myself but, if you are looking for a long hike in hike out it is the ultimo to carry up to 90pounds without problems...

also obviously, you will need a trail to walk..bushwacking isn't the ideal (even while it still does work on stretches if you force yourself) with a kayak on your back...keep it low and push or drag it through...

if all is open and easy (short distance) i just clip my boat to the cowtail and pull it with me...works but isn't nice on your gear and the manufacturer wont be happy with it either...

the yackpack has proven itself around the world already and obviously is a development of using camstraps or other devices to make some kind of backpack for your boat...

now here it is, ready available and it definatly works...

www.shivaoutdoors.com/shiva (for the gear)
www.shivaoutdoors.com/boathouse (for the kayaking stories...also check the gallery for photos with the yackpack)

the only prob with the reed one is that yourr boat could get stuck if you walkin throu trees! Turtle back did one worked well but expensive!

Either get a portage pad 2 pieces of pipe lagging and stick over cockpit rim to cushion it or my favourit make your own back pack thingy using an old rucksack and some roofrackstraps!
